Who is ready for summertime? The snow is fun, but nothing compares to the freedom of summer. With that, we are thrilled to announce our 2021 summer camp sessions! New this year will be a camp for 12-14 year-olds in June and a week of half-days for 4-5 year-olds. Check out our website to see the camp descriptions and register: https://ag.tennessee.edu/utg/Pages/camps.aspx.

We have limited camp scholarships available.

Our plan is to have camp in-person while following university policies, especially regarding the Covid-19 situation. Spaces are extremely limited, so register early to reserve your space! If, after registering, you determine your camper will not be able to attend you can apply the fee to a different week in 2021 or 2022 (or request a refund). UT Downtown Gallery: Photography from the Ewing Gallery permanent collection by Walker Evans

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Join us for First Friday events on Friday June 4 and Friday July 2 from 5-8pm at the UT Downtown Gallery.

For the months of June and July, the UT Downtown Gallery will be exhibiting photography from the Ewing Gallery permanent collection by Walker Evans.

80 years ago, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was published. To commemorate the anniversary of this text by Knoxville-born author, James Agee, we are exhibiting photographs by Walker Evans from the Ewing Gallery permanent collection that accompany that text.

Walker Evans’ photographs paired with James Agee’s classic work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, served as the culmination of Evans’ talents as well as the realistic portrayal of the conditions of the American tenant farmer during the 1930s. Walker Evans’ images revolutionized the standards of documentary photography.

This exhibition includes 50 framed photographs printed by the Library of Congress from Evans’ original negatives.

All events and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Open Wednesday - Friday 11am - 6pm and Saturdays from 10am - 3pm. UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37902. Information: 865-673-0802, http://web.utk.edu/~downtown

Kerri Martin Bio
I have lived in Knoxville for over 25 years. I originally came here to put my PhD in special education to work at East TN State University while my husband joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee. I later became a program manager at UT, raised a family, got a private pilot's license, and became certified in sailing and SCUBA- while enjoying the beauty of East Tennessee. Meanwhile, the desire to "make art" was always there and has recently demanded attention. For this first show, I wanted to highlight some of the beauty I have seen in our region and to share a few portraits by way of introduction to my work. I hope visitors will enjoy these untutored efforts, understanding that for me the quest is not necessarily to be a fine artist as much as it is to be a person who has a fine time with art.

Art Market Gallery: Sandy Hoeft & Julie Boisseau-Craig

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

First Friday Reception: June 4, 5:30-9 PM

June Featured Artists

Sandy Hoeft, Painter
I am always amazed by the beauty of the flowers here in Tennessee. When we moved here 5 years ago from Alaska, we inherited a yard that is so well planned and landscaped that we almost always have something blooming. Each flower is unique in it's shape and color. I love capturing the vibrant, bold colors, the delicate soft colors and the different shapes of the petals. Each bloom has its own personality. My hope is to share the joy I get from these beautiful flowers through my paintings.

Julie Boisseau-Craig, Glass Artist
Artist Julie Fawn Boisseau-Craig works in porcelain and glass primarily but utilizes metals and wood as necessary to create her sculptural installations. Julie also makes many functional works and wearable art in pottery and glass at Wild Pony Studio, her studio located in Rockford, Tennessee. Hot shop glass work is created at the Jackson County Green Energy Park in Dillsboro, North Carolina. She has taught art at Western Carolina University, Southwestern Community College and Occonoluftee Institute for Cultural Art. She has shown nationally and participated in many workshops and demonstrations. Her work responds to the pieces and parts that make up our lives. Julie observes the contradictions of our world and how those components come together to create memories. In her work she strives to combine components to bring out personal memories and feelings in her audience. Julie received her Masters of Fine Arts Degree in December of 2012.
