2009-2010 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks series: In May, orchestral colors abound with music by Ravel, Prokofiev and Respighi. The orchestra will open with Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, a work originally written as a children's piano duet. This revised orchestration brings to life the many whimsical characters of the Mother Goose tales. Young violinist Rachel Lee will join the orchestra to perform Prokofiev's intimate Violin Concerto No. 2. The 2009/2010 Masterworks season will conclude with two works by Respighi: Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, part of his famous "Roman Trilogy:" three symphonic poems that evoke the beauties of Rome.

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.

The Knoxville Watercolor Society will host a showing of new paintings by its members at the Fountain City Art Center from May 14 to June 11. There will be an opening reception on May 14 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

Every Spring, the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture plays host to the work of top students from the Department of Art and the College of Architecture and Design.

Everyday talented individuals spend time teaching the children of Knox County how to cultivate creativity through artwork. These individuals are the art instructors at each school. Starting May 7, an exhibition highlighting the works of the Knox County art teachers will be on display at the UT Gallery (106 S. Gay St.). It is important to the Dogwood Arts Festival to recognize the art teachers because they are teaching the future of art in our schools. These people are the ones devoting time and energy to ensure that art will continue to thrive in East Tennessee for future generations.
This exhibition will give teachers an opportunity to showcase their own artistic talents. In addition to displaying their art, Dogwood will be hosting a special rewards ceremony rewarding the top three exhibitors.
