Clayton Center for the Arts: United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Concert

Category: Music

A FREE concert featuring the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America’s Hot Brass. The concert is Tuesday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. This concert is FREE. Hot Brass will be performing in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. Hot Brass is a unique product sure to please music lovers of all types. During their concert, you are likely to hear rock, funk, jazz, blues, soul, swing and country, as well as the latest pop hits. Hot Brass defies conventional definition by thriving on diversity and creating a musical gumbo of genres to exploit each musician’s musical background. This ten-piece group utilizes vocals, drums and guitar to entice audiences to move their feet while also paying tribute to our brass roots: front-line tuba functioning in lieu of electric bass, a “beefed-up” horn section, and heavy emphasis on brass. Free tickets to the Hot Brass concert are available beginning May 11 at the Clayton Center Box Office. The box office is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is in the William Baxter Lee III Grand Foyer at the Clayton Center on the beautiful campus of Maryville College. Tickets are also available by calling the box office at (865) 981-8590 and reserving your tickets (limit four per request). Knoxville Museum of Art: Vision, Language and Influence

1539.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.

Free admission. Hours: Tues-Thurs 10-5; Fri 10-8; Sat 10-5; Sun 1-5. 1050 World’s Fair Park Drive, Knoxville, TN 37916. 865-525-6101, www.knoxart.org, info@knoxart.org
