While primarily known for their respective jazz performances and songwriting, newlywed musicians, Kelle Jolly and Will Boyd, can work their magic in a variety of music styles. She is an accomplished professional vocalist, songwriter, and music educator. While her style is sometimes evocative of Sarah Vaughan or Olitta Adams, Ms. Jolly’s infectious stage presence and unique style demonstrates a hybrid of sensitive song styling with conservative bursts of courageous musical creativity. She can surprise with anything from passionate ethno-rhythmic scat singing to whistle tones to comedy. She manages to execute a variety of styles with great aplomb without ever being precious. Boyd, an erudite multi-wind instrumentalist, is also an in-demand performer. A regular member of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, Will has also performed with the Streamliners, the Temptations and the Spinners. He is also a frequent accompanist with Grammy nominee, Donald Brown. When Jolly and Boyd perform together, his cool style nicely balances Ms. Jolly effervescence. The guy is a Zen master of woodwinds, and, together with Jolly, they encompass a wide array of musical knowledge ranging from traditional jazz standards, old school rhythm and blues, spirituals, acoustic Christmas carols, and pop music.

Contemporary Focus 2010 is the second installment of an annual KMA series that serves as a vital means of recognizing, supporting, and documenting the development of contemporary art in East Tennessee. Each year the KMA features emerging artists who work in new and experimental ways. Contemporary Focus 2010 presents the work of Emily Ward Bivens, Nick DeFord, and Evan Meaney. The art categorized as “contemporary” represents the leading edge of where artists are working today. Contemporary art is experimental, provocative, exciting – it is an investigation into new ideas that change the way art is made.

The public is invited to a free exhibition preview at the KMA Thursday, August 26 from 7 to 9pm. Contemporary Focus Artists Emily Ward Bivens, Nick DeFord, and Evan Meaney will be on hand to meet with guests, who can also enjoy the opening of Jane South: Shifting Structures on the same evening.

Emily Ward Bivens uses found and made objects to forge narratives, provoke or encourage interaction, and reveal fictional and non-fictional mysteries. These objects shift from prop to subject to evidence when used in performance, video, and installation. Characters or identities are created to act as subjects, authors, inventors, and curators of the work.

A Knoxville native, Nick DeFord earned his BFA in drawing from the University of Tennessee, and an MFA in fibers from Arizona State University. His work explores the visual culture of geography and cartography using common household materials. Through maps, globes, travel guides, pamphlets and charts, DeFord disrupts commonly recognizable systems to examine our relationship to identity and place, the known and the unknown.

Evan Meaney has been working with film, video, and emerging media for over a decade. Educated at Ithaca College and the University of Iowa, his interests have grown to include deconstructive sequencing, ghost stories, breakdancing, and the poetry of hexadecimal code.

Jane South has achieved international attention for her innovative mixed-media constructions that blur the lines between drawing, sculpture, installation art, and architecture. Born in Manchester, England, she draws inspiration from the industrial urban character of her hometown and of her adopted home in Brooklyn, New York, where she has resided since 1989. Using little more than a scalpel and colored inks, South transforms flat sheets of paper into a range of sculptural objects whose shapes mirror the contemporary urban environment. She cuts, folds, paints, and attaches each element to create forms resembling vents, containers, ladders, scaffolding, and other functional, industrially-fabricated structures. Working without a preconceived plan, the artist assembles these individual parts in elaborate groupings that thrust outward into space as dynamic sculptural assemblages. The slotted cut-outs on the surfaces of South’s drawings make visible their internal structure, and create intricate shadows that extend into the surrounding environment.

Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will spotlight the work of two member artists: wood carvings by Steve Smith and paintings and drawings by Marjorie Horne. The artworks in this exhibition were created during the MySpace Art Project, a two-day workshop held in late March 2010 at the Marcella Center for the Arts and Education in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The project was designed to introduce teens with autism to the concepts and skills required to create architectural design based on what they learned. MySpace Art Project is a program of VSA Arts Tennessee. Sponsors of this exhibition include Mark Holcomb, State Auto Insurance and the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons.

An exhibit featuring the art work of Ken Moffett and photographs of Karen Krogh will be on display at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.
Karen Krogh, Photographs - "TVUUC: The Light of Love"
For 23 years photography has been an artistic passion for Karen Krogh. The opportunity to freeze a moment in time and to reflect upon it drives her interest in this art form. Beginning as a photo lab assistant in California she became a corporate photographer for the Toyota Motor Company. Later she moved on to magazine and public relations work. She is currently associated with a Knoxville commercial studio and also accepts freelance assignments.
The images in this exhibit are reflections from a most difficult and challenging year in the life of Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. Her photographs convey the incredible resiliency of a congregation of courageous and loving people.
Ken Moffett, "Transparent Colors"
Ken Moffett's exhibit features five decades of watercolor painting by this architect/artist. His vocation as an architect has limited his time for artistic activities but not his success as an artist. His work has been exhibited in five states and is represented in several private collections. Ken's technique of using a single brush for an entire painting helps to define his work, freeing him from conventional detailing and creating integrated and somewhat abstract compositions. He has lived in Knoxville since 1975 and has been a member of TVUUC since the 1980s.

August 2nd, marks author, James Baldwin's 86th Birthday. Knoxville-based artist, Gary Elgin is celebrating by donating his recent work: "James Baldwin, Always Welcome At The Table" to the Burlington Branch of the Knoxville Library system located at 4614 Asheville Highway. Elgin, who's work "Keegan Eating Biscuits" was recently featured as a finalist in the 1st Annual International Biscuit Festival art competion, is a new and fresh face on Knoxville's established art scene. The Burlington Branch Library will host Elgin's new exhibit "Familiar Faces: Old & New" in their media room/gallery. On Tuesday, August 10th at 12 noon, a special reception for the unique portrait exhibit will take place. The celebration will include readings from Baldwin's work, as well as a formal presentation of Elgin's Baldwin portrait to the Library. The Library hopes that this donation may be the start of a growing permanent collection by local artists. The "Familiar Faces" exhibit includes 12 works, from 1989 to the present, and includes a number of Knoxville's "familiar faces" as well as a few of celebrities, such as television's Queen of Comedy, Lucille Ball and comedian, Ed Wynn, but it will be Baldwin's portrait that will take center stage on Tuesday August 10th. The exhibit event is open to the public and free of charge. There will be refreshments as well as a birthday cake to help celebrate "Jimmy's" special day.
