Mural Workshop: Six new murals are now on display in the Curio at Maker Exchange as a part of the 2nd Annual Mural Workshop hosted by Dogwood Arts and professional muralist Megan Lingerfelt. Six local/regional artists were selected to participate in the workshop — with each one designing and painting an 8x8ft mural over the last two weeks. The murals will remain on display through the end of May 2024.

Join us on the second Saturday in March for the exhibition reception for 'Jars of Clay' by Stephen Phillips! Stephen Phillips has always been intrigued by the arts whether music, dance, or visual arts. His start in ceramics can be linked back to his childhood as a kid who found enjoyment in the mixing of earth with water.

Artist Statement: In my recent work, I have been exploring the juxtaposition of textures and colors. I use underglazes as the base color and gloss glazes to give a differentiation between the textures and appearances provided by both glazes.

Come enjoy several new works from Yigal Ozeri, utilizing AI technology to create the compositions. Photorealism as a genre pushes the line between technology and fine art.

Photorealist, Smithsonian-collected artist, Yigal Ozeri, portrays both sensual fantasy and hyper detailed reality in his photorealistic paintings. His oeuvre is characterized by two distinct styles: ethereal portraiture of women existing in nature “without malice” and a realist perspective of America through a regional lens. Originally an abstract painter, Ozeri took on the helm of realism through early inspiration by Spanish Baroque painters like Diego Velázquez.

“The exhibition title was inspired by my late grandfather, Floyd Whiteside, a retired pastor from Muscle Shoals, Alabama who resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He would often use the phrase in his sermons when the spirit was moving or when he wanted to make sure the congregation was keeping up. While preparing for the exhibition and thinking of home, his words kept ringing in my ear. “Y’all Don’t Hear Me” is a statement by someone who feels disregarded, and to me, that resonates with the Black Appalachian community. You don’t hear us because you’re not listening; you’re not listening because you don’t know we exist. I want to amplify our narrative and remind people that there are quality artists creating in the mountains." – Kreneshia Whiteside-McGee

Harriet Howell - silk painting
Harriet Howell has a varied art history. She has a BFA from the University of Tennessee and worked as a free-lance graphic designer for over 20 years. She taught pastel landscape drawing at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts for several years. She is an artist member of Tennessee Watercolor Society, in which she has held many offices, including President. She has juried several local and regional exhibitions. She no longer teaches, but her work is exhibited in the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville.

Ron Williams - photography
Ron developed an interest in art in his early teens and continued through college. By his senior year in high school he had the opportunity to train under Raymond Williams, a well known local watercolor artist, and earned an art scholarship from the Carol Reese Museum at ETSU. He spent two years at ETSU studying fine art and photography then left ETSU to take an apprenticeship position at Bays Mountain Nature Interpretive Center working as an exhibits curator and doing planetarium illustrations. Ron’s next 40 years were focused on the computer graphics industry. Although he had given up his love for creating with pencil and brush, he was able to dedicate his energy to computer graphics and photographic technology. After relocating to East Tennessee in 2011 he began to understand the difference between taking pictures and creating what he likes to call ARTography. He focused on expanding his knowledge of the available tools and took on challenges ranging from snowflakes to the Milky Way. He is inspired by the grandness of Mother Nature both big and small, and it is his goal to capture images that inspire and invoke emotion.

Victoria is an artist and educator working and living in Knoxville. Working in many forms of media such as painting, mixed media, charcoal, and photography, she creates artworks based on her response to the materials, resulting in atmospheric, textural scenes.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present four new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from March 1-30, 2024. A free gathering with the artists will take place on Friday, March 1, from 5:00-9:00 PM and features music by Tinca Tinca.

"My artwork is all collage, but from a different perspective. My artwork aims to challenge the viewer, making the familiar unfamiliar and the strange normal. It is up to the viewer to find a focal point, to look for the theme, and understand what is and what isn't as they observe. My collages are influenced by various art styles and forms ranging from abstract expressionism to surrealism to pop art. My art is also influenced by comic books, social media, graphic design, science fiction, body horror, and mythology." Luis Santiago is a multidisciplinary artist focusing on collage. Drawing on influences ranging from comic books, graphic novels, animation, mythology, music and literature, he pulls these elements together on the canvas. The surreal, the abstract, and the absurd come together to add depth to the pieces. Santiago received a Bachelor of Arts from Montclair State University. Instagram @LSartnstuff

"Aging into Vintage is the title for a new show which catalogs my experiences and works over the 25 years of my life and is based on a concept I learned when I started my first job at an antique store. In the resale market, anything older than 25 years is considered “vintage.” Having turned 25 after numerous "once-in-a-lifetime" events such as the COVID pandemic, 2008 recession, 9/11, and more, this series is a reflection of what it means to have lived through so much yet so little in the grand scheme, emulating a sense of walking through my map of memories in a both intimately personal and abstracted manner." Hannah Hancock is a professional mixed media artist, born and raised in Knoxville. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Maryville College and currently works as a manager at Jerry’s Artarama. She has participated in numerous regional art exhibitions throughout East Tennessee and teaches at a variety of art and crafts centers throughout the area. Instagram @coolio_punk
