UT Downtown Gallery: Streets I Ran

Recent photographs by Lui Ho-Jang. Opening reception & Meet the Artist, Friday October 23, 6-9pm. Consisting of large digital photographs, this exhibition of recent work by Liu Ho-Jang offers the Knoxville community the unique opportunity to experience the art of one of Taiwan's leading contemporary artists. UT School of Music: Viola Celebration

This year's celebration is packed with exciting events for violists of all ages and abilities, including a series of master classes with renowned violists, an introduction to eurhythmics, a seminar on performance issues in the Bach Suites, a faculty recital, a Suzuki workshop for younger violists, viola related exhibits, and of course, the popular All-Viola Orchestra! There is something for every violist at the Viola Celebration, and all events are FREE, so come join the fun! Jubilee Community Arts: Cruz Contreras & Leah Gardner

Category: Music

Traditional Song; Leah Gardner and Cruz Contreras are long time members of the Knoxville music scene who have recently received critical and popular praise for their work with the Black Lillies, who recently released their first CD Whiskey Angel and performed at Bonnaroo. Leah Gardner is known for her singing with the Maid Rite String Band while mandolinist, singer and songwriter Cruz Contreras became a local icon with former bands Robinella and the CC Stringband, the Cruz Contreras Band and the Stringbeans and for his work with singer-songwriter Jay Clark. The duo perform both traditional and original material, influenced by a range of Southern music traditions. They are joined by bassist Taylor Coker. Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Petrushka

2009-2010 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks series: October's Masterworks concert features an all-orchestral program focused on stories told through music. The main work in this program is the colorful ballet, Petrushka, by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. The orchestra will provide super titles detailing the story's progress projected above the proscenium to help the audience follow along. The concert will open with Richman's An Overture to Blanche, derived from incidental music that he wrote for a production of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. The evening will conclude with Dvorak's Golden Spinning Wheel a symphonic poem that tells the tale of a king and the magic that restores his love to him.
