Jubilee Community Arts: Clyde Davenport

Category: Music

Old-Time Fiddle; One of the most important figures in the southern mountain fiddle tradition is 87-year-old Clyde Davenport from Fentress County on the Cumberland Plateau. Following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and three of his brothers, all fiddlers, Davenport began playing before he was ten. His repertory emphasizes the spooky, eccentric solo fiddle tunes played for listening, too crooked to dance to, played in a gliding and graceful style. In 1992 the National Endowment for the Arts recognized Davenport with a National Heritage Award, and just this last year he received the Tennessee Governor's Folklife Heritage Award. Bobby Fulcher and Michael DeFosche will accompany Davenport. The Laurel Theater is located on the corner of 16th and Laurel Avenue in the historic Fort Sanders neighborhood of Knoxville near the UT campus at 1538 Laurel Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37916. The Canvas Can Do Miracles: Urban Breakthrough Mural Unveiling

  • October 17, 2009
  • 11:00 AM

"The Canvas Can Do Miracles" Art Studio in partnership with The Literacy Imperative, Inc. will unveil "Urban Breakthrough", a Mural dedicated to the memory of victims of inner city violence at the community store located in the Walter P. Taylor Homes community. The mural is a collaboration of many talented art students across Knoxville: "The Canvas Can Do Miracles" Art Studio students; UT LEAD Summer Institute students; volunteers and students from the "Summer Colors" art class for children. All joined in with one cause - to create awareness about the issues that plague our streets and how we as the community can proactively participate in the resolution of these issues. As a faith based initiative "The Canvas Can Do Miracles" Art Studio seeks to discourage the chaos by encouraging the creativity. It offers individuals entangled in a life of drug addiction a motivating atmosphere to create art work free of charge. As artist and business owner, Jackie Holloway, recovered drug addict for 12 years, says "Art saved my life, it drew me out of thinking about the wrong thing to living the right way". She works along side Artist/Knoxville Museum of Art Board Member, Reverend Alan Jones as co-director of the studio.
