Performing for thousands of elementary school students at this Fall's annual Young People's Concerts at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. KSO Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum will produce and conduct the concert entitled Musical Superheroes. Performances, sponsored by Covenant Health, will be held at 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM on October 27 and 28 and at 9:30 AM only on October 29. On Tuesday, Oct. 27th, Drive By Press will present a public lecture at 7 p.m. in Room 105 of the Art and Architecture Building. On Wednesday, Oct. 28th from 8am - 4pm they will be hand printing one-of-a-kind prints and apparel with the public in the NE corner of Staff Lot 9 (south of the Humanities Building) on Volunteer Blvd. These events are free and open to the public. Described as "print missionaries," Drive By Press is run by Greg Nanney and Joseph Velasquez travels the country presenting traditional printmaking processes on a press which they unload from their van at each site. Each woodblock is hand cut then custom printed on location. Participants are able to select a design block and then view the inking and printing of their garment or sheet of paper, collaborating with the artists in the selection and placement of the design. Drive By Press are the only operation in the country using this printing method and are truly "one of a kind" apparel printers.

Join us for a wine and cheese reception and exhibition of high resolution photographs featuring Discover Life in America's All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory on Monday, October 19, from 5:30-7:30 PM. DLIA is involved in a quest to identify and understand all the species of life within an 800-square-mile ecosystem in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Researchers seek knowledge about the components, abundance, and diversity of life, from spiders in the soil to slime molds in the forest canopy. The primary tool of DLIA is the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, which brings scientists from around the world to inventory the estimated 100,000 species of living organisms in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These captivating illustrations capture the beauty and diversity of the species discovered in our region and celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Admission to the reception and display is free, but reservations are requested. In addition to the reception, the photos will be on display throughout the month of October in the Garden Office. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg will present "Women in Wood," an exhibition to bring light to the exceptional quality of work being created by women artists working in the medium of wood - both woodturning and constructed wood. The public is invited to the opening reception in the main gallery and lecture presented by nationally renowned studio wood sculptor Betty Scarpino on Friday, Oct. 16, at 6:00 pm. The exhibition runs October 16-January 2, 2010. The guest lecturer Betty Scarpino will also be teaching a weekend master class that weekend at the school. She has a background in industrial arts, sculpture, and design, all of which she teaches and writes about. Her work is represented in many public and private collections including The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Mobile Museum of Art. Her work was included in the recent book, New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art.
