The UTK Creative Writing Program, Writers in the Library, Ready for the World, and the Haines-Morris Foundation invite you to our 2011-2012 Series of Readings and Performances, Free and Open to the Public. All events will take place at 7:00 PM in the Hodges Library Auditorium on the UT campus (unless otherwise noted).

Edward Francisco is a poet, novelist, an essayist, playwright, and scholar. He is the author of two novels, Till Shadows Flee, and The Dealmaker. His poetry collections include (Lie)fe Boat (winner of the 1995 Bluestone Press award); Death, Child, and Love (2000); The Alchemy of Words, (one of Small Press Review’s Top Picks for 2007); and Hunting Keats (volume forthcoming from Birch Brook Press). Francisco was also principal editor of The South in Perspective, and anthology of Southern literature, published by Prentice-Hall publishers. He is Professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was recently voted Student Choice Teacher of the Year for the seventh time

Linda Parsons Marion’s third poetry collection, Bound, chronicles the work and fabric of five generations of a Tennessee family. She has published in Shenandoah and Prairie Schooner among other magazines, and is an editor at the University of Tennessee. She has twice won the Tennessee Arts Commission Literary Fellowship in Poetry, and for many years served as poetry editor for Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine.

Book lovers of all genres are invited to discuss Bloodroot at this month's meeting of All Over the Page, Lawson McGhee Library's recently formed book club. Set for 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2012, the public is invited to delve into this stunning debut novel by Morristown author, Amy Greene. The conversation will be facilitated by Summar West, English professor at Maryville College. Light refreshments will be served.

Begun in 1947 by C. Kermit Ewing, founder of The University of Tennessee School of Art, the annual student exhibition has become one of the oldest competitions in the country and one of the highlights of the Ewing Gallery's exhibition season. This competition has been an outlet for UT's talented students for 65 years, wherein countless works of art of every form and medium have been displayed and applauded by The University and Knoxville community.

This year's jurors are Amy Koch, an assistant professor of Art History at Towson University; Karen Shaw, New York artist and curator for the Islip Art Museum and Carriage House; and Kenneth White, graphic designer and recruiter for web design.

Both Kenneth White and Karen Shaw will be lecturing on Tuesday March 6th. Kenneth White's lecture will be at 4pm in room 109 and Karen Shaw's lecture begins at 7pm in room 109.
Both lectures are open to the public. We hope to see you there.

“E(labor)ated Surfaces,” an art exhibit at Pellissippi State Community College, features the creations of eight artists working in what is billed as “an entirely fabricated production.” The exhibit is free and open to the public. A closing reception honoring the artists takes place on the last day, 1-3 p.m. The reception is also free and open to the public.

Artists exhibiting in “E(labor)ated Surfaces” are James Arendt, Nick DeFord, Briena Harmening, Carri Jobe, Lesley Patterson-Marx, Herb Rieth, Jessie Van Der Laan and Charlotte Wegrzynowski.

The monthly art exhibit by the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade beginning March 3 is a colorful collection of “Abstract” art.

This exhibition of sleek, vibrant, hip color schemes moves us into a brighter, more playful display. The good old days were filled with recess, eating glue, and scribbling with rainbow-colored crayons. And while your drawings might not have been masterpieces, you can re-capture the fun, by looking for the creatively-named colors of your childhood in the art exhibition.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present “Elements: Human and Natural”, a new exhibition of photographs by local artist Jeff Tidwell, opening Friday, March 2, at 5:00 PM on the north side of the Balcony at the Emporium Center in Knoxville. This exhibition reflects Tidwell’s desire to capture the basic elements, such as light, water and earth, as well as human elements: the way people behave, the things people make, and the emotional connection to those things.

"2 Many Pixels" photo gallery is proud to present the work of David Habercom. The artist will be displaying 2 different photo essays: "The missionary journals", a photographic account of the disappearance of the Rev. Theron K. Lucas from Little Pigeon in 1920. "Under the bridge", a collection of dignified portraits of those who do not have a home with a true focus on human beauty.
