The Wild Thyme Players announce the return of their free stage combat training program, “Shake, Rattle & Role,” with a six-week introductory series. Classes will be offered every Sunday beginning February 12th until March 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, off Merchants Drive in Knoxville. Training is open to all interested individuals over age 16, and will include a variety of weapons: Broadsword, Rapier & Dagger, Quarterstaff, Epee, Knife and Unarmed Stage Combat. All training and equipment is provided FREE of charge. Please wear comfortable athletic clothing, and come prepared to move. Classes will include members of The Silver Stage Players, so seniors are encouraged to participate. “Shake, Rattle & Role” instructors are members of and train with the Society of American Fight Directors. February is a great time to be planning and preparing your vegetable garden for the upcoming growing season and it’s a great time to join us for a workshop. Community garden specialist Amanda Plante will lead this informative class and will cover seed starting, crop rotation and succession planting, the best varieties for the southeast and a section discussing heirloom vegetables. $10 members, $15 nonmembers.

GO! Contemporary Dance Works, a local non-profit dance company comprised of 22 local youth aged 12-18, will present its world premiere of ALICE, a full-length contemporary ballet based on the Lewis Carroll novel, Alice in Wonderland. The immensely popular story combines classical, contemporary and aerial dance with powerful sets and vibrant costumes.

There will be a wonderful gala event prior to the Saturday evening performance at Club LeConte. An elegant buffet dinner, perfect for the pre-Valentine's Day celebration, a silent auction and preferred performance seating is included in the ticket price.

As part of this season's Shakespeare Project, Knoxville Opera presents "Romeo and Juliette" in French with projected English translations, at the Tennessee Theater.

Shakespeare's tragic Romeo & Juliette has captivated audiences for more than 400 years. Gounod's lush, romantic score enhances the story with some of the most passionate music found in all of opera. On Valentine's weekend Knoxville Opera welcomes Puerto Rico's enchanting Zulimar López-Hernández and San Francisco Opera's sensational Noah Stewart as the passionate, ill-fated lovers.

Performances will be at the Tennessee Theatre on Friday, February 10 at 8:00pm and Sunday, February 12 at 2:30pm. The student dress rehearsal will be Feb. 8 at 6:30 PM and performances will be Feb. 10 at 8:00 PM and Feb. 12 at 2:30 PM.

Jake Livesay of Knoxville will show acrylic paintings, and Victor Schmidt of Nashville will display forged steel and brass sculptures. The simple saying “If not now, when?” reflects the artists’ desire to draw attention and enjoyment to their work in the present moment. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from February 3-24, 2012 with an opening reception as part of First Friday activities on February 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Guitarist Steve Kaufman, a three-time winner of the National Flatpicking Championships, will offer an all-level mandolin workshop in Alcoa, TN, February 3rd and 4th, 2012 to be held at the Mainstay Suites 361 Fountain View Circle, Alcoa, TN and an all-level flatpicking guitar workshop on February 17th -18th, 2012 to be held at The Townsend Visitors Center, 7906 E. The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.
