Clayton Center for the Arts: "Paul Robeson" with Horace Smith
Category: Theatre
PAUL ROBESON written by Phillip Hayes Dean is a play with music featuring Horace E. Smith III. A powerful chronicle of the life of Paul Robeson, taking us from his childhood in New Jersey to his adult life around the world. Robeson faces the racism prevalent in society in the early part of the twentieth century. He strives to rise above, and it is his triumph in that struggle that turns Robeson into a modern day hero.
Here with his wit, sensitivity and smoldering passion is the story of how Robeson fought to preserve his humanity.
Tickets are $10. Students (through college)
East Tennessee History Center: Physical Remains of the Civil War
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
Knoxville’s Civil War era is extremely well-documented. The scientifically precise maps of Orlando Poe, the panoramic photographs of George Barnard, the written reports of military commanders of both sides during and after the conflict, plus the many newspaper accounts, diaries and letters all add to our ability to know the places, people and events that were the Civil War years. But more than just a well-illustrated history, thanks to the pin point accuracy of the maps produced by West Point trained engineers, it is actually possible to know where to look for the physical remains of that time period.
Dr. Markel will discuss successful archaeological studies which have been conducted here in Knoxville as well as the dangers posed by the easy availability of site location information and the prosperous Civil War artifact trade.
The lecture takes place on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center in the Museum Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 865-215-8824.

Oak Ridge Playhouse: Brighton Beach Memoirs
Category: Theatre
Part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy. The poignant and funny memoir captures the life of a struggling pre-war Jewish family living in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn home. Adolescent Eugene Jerome, dreaming of baseball and girls, must somehow cope with the mundane existence of his family life: a formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother. Add in his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two rapidly aging young daughters, and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Horizons: Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Horizons is an installation by noted Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir. The exhibition includes 12 androgynous, life-sized iron figures in the KMA’s South Garden. Each is unique in pose and expression, and has a polished glass band inserted in its torso. The artist explains this juxtaposition of glass and iron, “The color of the iron signifies their primal quality—as if they are emerging from the earth†while “Glass as a material has a lot of different connotations. It can be fragile, yet dangerous. It can be translucent, or solid . . . It's like water, but also like air.â€
Thorarinsdottir has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan, and Australia over the last 30 years, as well as in the United States, where Horizons has been traveling for the past three years. The installation is featured in the documentary Horizons by independent filmmaker Frank Cantor, which won the CINE Special Jury Award in Washington as the best documentary of 2008. Thórarinsdóttir’s work is held by collectors worldwide, and she has been commissioned by both the Icelandic and English governments for major sculptural installations. She has received numerous awards including the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland in 2009.

Tennessee Jazz Legends
Category: Music
Some of the foremost Jazz musicians hailing from the Volunteer State are united
for the first time in a rare and exciting lineup:
Trumpet legend Marvin Stamm has performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra,
Benny Goodman and a Who's Who list of music world celebrities. An artist in constantly
evolution, his performances in duo, trio, quartet, or with symphony orchestra's all over
the US are invariably exciting and imaginative.
Rusty Holloway has exhibited admirable impartiality throughout his diverse career. From Carnegie Hall to music joints of dubious reputation, his virtuosic and
groove-ridden bass playing has won the admiration of fellow musicians and audiences
alike.
Keith Brown, originally from Knoxville, is one of the great treasures of the local jazz scene. In addition to teaching full time at UT where heconducts the University of Tennessee jazz ensemble, Keith can be heard with Boling, Brown, and Holloway at Baker Peter's on Thursday evenings and at Lucille's on Saturdays with Early Bird featuring Donald Brown.
Pianist Bill Swann, from eastern
Tennessee, became serious about musicin high school; in his senior year was playing 3-5 nights a week in nightclubs across Tennessee. After two years on the road with a local band, Bill left the band pursue the study of jazz piano in college. He won an outstanding soloist award at the 1999 Mobile Collegiate Jazz Competition.
