Peter Goché is an artist, architect and educator. Goché works with the nature of perception and spatial phenomenon in developing his experimental drawing practice. His works provoke a temporal-spatial encounter that understand the simultaneous and complex nature of cerebral and corporeal experience. He is founder and director of Black Contemporary, a rural field station dedicated to the study of experimental drawing and perception. He has staged exhibitions of his work at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, The Soap Factory, the Des Moines Art Center, University of Florida School of Architecture and the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery. He has co-lead workshops at the 2014 and 2018 Venice Biennale. As educator in the Department of Architecture and foundational design at Iowa State University, Goché holds both B. Arch and M. Arch degrees in architectural studies from Iowa State University. Goché has presented papers and lectured on his creative practice and scholarship at many conferences and cultural institutions throughout North America and Western Europe. His understanding and sensibilities regarding spatial experience and ethno-specific design stem from an agrarian upbringing and ongoing research in art, architecture and anthropology at Iowa State University. Equally, his travel throughout North America, Europe and the Czech Republic have nurtured his interest in human beings, their practices and the ways they occupy and perceive space.

Lecture Abstract

When thinking about theory, one is confronted with a fundamental paradox: it simultaneously encourages and resists investigative analysis. Black Contemporary serves as an experiential laboratory for ongoing investigations intended to expand our knowledge specific to the study of atmospheric logics and the American agricultural landscape. Each staging is driven by the nascent possibility of a persistent desire to intercourse with existing material surrounds pursuant a philosophical position that leverages perceptual notions of chiaroscuro in the practice of understanding and generating a set of spatial valence within the material culture of a post-industrial site. This talk proposes theory as a material practice that opposes the objective distance typically associated with such dogma through the immersive act of experimental criticism supported by a set of inserted material stagings with a relative capacity to unite or react or interact with the latent dimensions of the inherited landscape.

Begun in 1947 by C. Kermit Ewing, founder of the University of Tennessee School of Art, the annual student exhibition has become one of the oldest competitions in the country and one of the highlights of the Ewing Gallery’s exhibition season. This competition has been an outlet for UT’s talented students for 77 years, wherein countless works of art of every form have been displayed and applauded by the university and Knoxville community.

Gary White's work pays homage to the past while celebrating the present. Histories, lifeways, ancestors, folklore, and tribal traditions all influence his artwork. An interdisciplinary artist, Nyasha Madamombe combines tradition and technology to tell the untold story of the collective African experience. Moving between disciplines allows her to examine and spotlight issues related to collective memory, tradition, the spiritual, and the contemporary.

About the Artist: Desiderio Manresa Bodipo, artistically known as Mene Manresa, was born on the island of Annobon (Equatorial Guinea). From an early age, he studied drawing, painting, and ceramics at the Hispano Guinean Cultural Center in Malabo. Manresa is inspired by everyday factors of his environment, and he interposes them into an abstract and modern-realistic world. His work is unique with vivid colors that impact viewers at first sight and help them navigate his world of imaginary composition.

Carol Quinn has painted and exhibited for decades, mostly in the Southeast and in New York City. She began as a watercolorist painting mostly nature and then moved into various mixed media, larger creations, and more abstraction in design. Her work is mainly from experimentation with the mediums and from a passion for exploring color and textures. Her degrees are in Human Ecology from the University of Tennessee. She has been a member of Art Market Gallery since 2018.

Megan Wolfkill explores the nature of queerness as a fractured amalgamation of experiences, expectations, and personal truths. Her paintings tap into her sense of touch and include experimentation with two-sided paintings, mirroring, and iridescent and reflective materials. Wolfkill is pursuing her Masters of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, and will graduate in May 2024. She is a finalist in the 2024 Miami University Yeck Young Painters Competition, and recently presented at SECAC in Richmond, VA. Megan has had artwork in numerous juried exhibitions across four states and in many online galleries.
