MFA Thesis Exhibition - Group 1
In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work, and to defend their work during an oral examination in front of a faculty committee. Due to the number of graduate students enrolled in the UT School of Art, these exhibitions generally take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the gallery space.

Soften the Glare, Unify as Dust, explores Daoist philosophy, Spiritual Sublimation, and a Flow State.

Chloe Wack - we live here.
we live here. depicts the Knoxville neighborhood of Belle Morris through the lens of artist and resident Chloe Wack. Part documentary, part mapping, and part homemaking, we live here. hopes to remind viewers to say hi to their neighbors.

Megan Wolfkill - Back to Back
Back-to-Back is an exhibition of paintings that explores archives, disorientation, abstraction, the passage of time, and the body’s role in each of these concepts. Megan Wolfkill stains unprimed canvas surfaces with fluid pigment, which integrates the surface, the material, and the mark into one inseparable entity. The surfaces of the paintings hold softness, sensitivity, and a “lived-in” feeling that invite an intimate and quiet read of the nuanced abstract forms.

Mural Workshop: Six new murals are now on display in the Curio at Maker Exchange as a part of the 2nd Annual Mural Workshop hosted by Dogwood Arts and professional muralist Megan Lingerfelt. Six local/regional artists were selected to participate in the workshop — with each one designing and painting an 8x8ft mural over the last two weeks. The murals will remain on display through the end of May 2024.

The Dogwood Arts Synergy Exhibition showcases artwork by gifted K-12 art students alongside their art educators in an exhibition at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville! See the results of the artistic student-teacher synergy that happens every day in our schools. Awards and scholarships are presented to encourage further development of these art students’ artistic aptitude.

A Closing Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held at the Clayton Center for the Arts (502 East Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN 37804) on March 28th from 5:30-7:30PM. Awards will be presented at 6:30pm. All artists, families, and friends are encouraged to attend this wonderful celebration!

Join us on the second Saturday in March for the exhibition reception for 'Jars of Clay' by Stephen Phillips! Stephen Phillips has always been intrigued by the arts whether music, dance, or visual arts. His start in ceramics can be linked back to his childhood as a kid who found enjoyment in the mixing of earth with water.

Artist Statement: In my recent work, I have been exploring the juxtaposition of textures and colors. I use underglazes as the base color and gloss glazes to give a differentiation between the textures and appearances provided by both glazes.

Come enjoy several new works from Yigal Ozeri, utilizing AI technology to create the compositions. Photorealism as a genre pushes the line between technology and fine art.

Photorealist, Smithsonian-collected artist, Yigal Ozeri, portrays both sensual fantasy and hyper detailed reality in his photorealistic paintings. His oeuvre is characterized by two distinct styles: ethereal portraiture of women existing in nature “without malice” and a realist perspective of America through a regional lens. Originally an abstract painter, Ozeri took on the helm of realism through early inspiration by Spanish Baroque painters like Diego Velázquez.

About the Curator: LaKesha Y. Lee is a second-year MFA student in Painting and Drawing at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 2019, she received her Bachelor of Fine Art from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Since then, she has been in many group exhibitions throughout the South. Lee uses her work to provide a positive outlook on black identity within the black community, the obstacles surrounding intergenerational traumas, racism, and self worth. By creating a positive representation of African Americans, she seeks to create new, positive narratives.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Dogwood Arts and the Big Ears Festival and curated by Kreneshia Whiteside-McGee.

“The exhibition title was inspired by my late grandfather, Floyd Whiteside, a retired pastor from Muscle Shoals, Alabama who resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He would often use the phrase in his sermons when the spirit was moving or when he wanted to make sure the congregation was keeping up. While preparing for the exhibition and thinking of home, his words kept ringing in my ear. “Y’all Don’t Hear Me” is a statement by someone who feels disregarded, and to me, that resonates with the Black Appalachian community. You don’t hear us because you’re not listening; you’re not listening because you don’t know we exist. I want to amplify our narrative and remind people that there are quality artists creating in the mountains." – Kreneshia Whiteside-McGee
