Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Widowland, the M.F.A Thesis Exhibition of Jessie Van der Laan will take place at the Downtown Gallery. In this print and fiber installation, Van der Laan investigates ideas of love and loss. In a space filled with many repeated objects, there is a sense of loneliness, emptiness, and sorrow; however, we are only able to recognize these absences by acknowledging the pieces that are missing. Van der Laan is receiving her Masters of Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In this show, she builds upon print techniques and theory in combination with sculptural, fiber based work. The hours of the show are Wednesday, April 8 through Friday April 10, 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday April 11, 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a public reception on Friday April 10 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Knox County Public Library and the City of Knoxville: Brown Bag - Green Book

Category: Lecture, panel

Elizabeth Eason, owner of the design firm Elizabeth Eason Architecture, will talk about Cradle to Cradle/Remaking the Way We Make Things, a provocative and visionary book which questions the wisdom of "reduce, reuse, recycle." Authors William McDonough and Michael Braungart propose that products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new - either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are).

All concerts will be in the ArtSpace of A1LabArts, located in the Fireproof Building at 201 Randolph and Magnolia. These evenings, billed as a "True 21st Century Music Series" will cover distinctive genres which have arisen since the atomic expansion of abstract art in the 1950's. Each evening concert will focus on one nuanced genre, including Laptop, Musique Concrete, Vintage Analog, Ambient, Acoustic, and Net-based.

His photograph "Woodruff's on Gay Street, Knoxville, TN" was selected by the public from hundreds of artwork pieces to become the official Dogwood Arts Festival's 2009 Limited Edition Fine Art Print. The photograph is a digitally colored and edited panoramic image of the Woodruff building on Gay Street, taken early one Sunday morning in downtown Knoxville. Prints of the winning photograph will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the show at the East Tennessee History Center. Phil Savage will be available for signing of the limited edition prints at the History Center from noon to 5 p.m. on April 17 and 18.
