Marvyille Collete-Community Concert Band: Made in America

  • April 19, 2009
  • 3:00 PM

Category: Music

The Maryville College-Community Concert Band will present its annual free spring concert with a selection of tunes that are "Made In America" and express the musical thoughts of some American composers of ethnic and concert band music. The downbeat for this free concert will be in the College's Alumni Gymnasium. The concert will have a rousing beginning with America's most famous bandmaster/composer John Phillip Sousa's U.S. Marine Corps march "Semper Fidelis." This will be followed by Travis J. Weller's "American Visions," written to honor Mr. Weller's father, a veteran of the Vietnam War; "Variations on a Shaker Melody," excerpted from Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and Joseph Wilcox Jenkin's "American Overture," by, composed in 1953 for the U.S. Army Field Band. Next will be bandmaster/concert band composer James Curnow's "Inventions" from the "Sacred Harp," which will feature cadenzas from several members of the band. The title, "Sacred Harp," refers to the human sacred harp…the voice. Then Mr. Curnow's "Appalachian Dances" in three parts "Haste to the Wedding," a jig, "Cherry Tree," an air and "Soldier's Joy," a breakdown or reel in the British Isles. A home-grown highlight of the program will be the performance of Van Morrison's "Moondance," arranged by the Maryville College-Community Concert Band's first chair trumpeter Mark Boring, and featuring the band's first chair trombonist, Jeff Jennings. The band will then perform "Duke Ellington in Concert," a collection of five of Mr. Ellington's more famous compositions, arranged for band by Paul Murtha. Concluding the concert will be the playing of Henry Fillmore's "The President's March," dedicated to the presidents of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla, and truly a spirited finale to the Maryville College-Community Concert Band's performance of some of the vast treasury of Music-Made in America by Americans.
