Knoxville Symphony Orchestra & Knoxville Choral Society Concert

This season's concerts focus on a spiritual program contrasting the sacred and the profane. The orchestra will open with Messian's Les Offrandes Oublièes and Sibelius' Symphony No. 7, his last symphony and possibly the most profound demonstration of his inner faith. Stravinsky's Symphony of the Psalms and Borodin's Polovstian Dances, from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Prince Igor, will feature the Knoxville Choral Society, under the direction of Eric Thorson.

East Tennessee Technology Access Center: Workshops

About increasing children's literacy skills. The workshop will be held at ETTAC's Knoxville office at 4918 N. Broadway. Participants will learn about effective strategies to develop literacy and learn ways to work with young children with disabilities to promote emerging literacy skills, including uses of assistive technology devices, modifications to home and classroom settings, and ways to integrate assistive technology devices and strategies into ordinary daily routines.

The first day will be led by Dan Herlihy, a national trainer on assistive technology and literacy strategies. Dan will be teaching about all the ways to build literacy skills. The second day will be led by Alice Wershing who will work with those who attend to create and develop products (a "Make and Take" activity), in conjunction with their personalized action plans for what they need to learn or do to maximize and support future literacy development in their children. Parents, speech therapists, teachers and social workers (Child and Family Studies, Early Childhood Development, Pre-school, Birth-3),
librarians, disability support groups (such as Down Syndrome, autism), STEP, and TEIS case workers are encouraged to attend.

Salvation Army: Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event at the Amphitheater at World's Fair Park. From 6-7 we will be having a very casual picnic and recognizing some extraordinary volunteer contributions. From 7-8 we will be hosting a free concert by the group Spiritual to the 'Bone. The are a 10 pc. trombone ensemble that travels the world for The Salvation Army. They are led by Mr. Stephen Bulla, who is the chief arranger for The President's Own U.S. Marine Corps Band and the White House Orchestra.

Students for the Study of Law and Culture: Law, Art, and the War on Terror

APRIL 15: Wafaa Bilal, an Iraqi born artist and professor, will present a lecture 7 p.m. in Room 109 in the Art and Architecture Building on Wednesday, April 15. Professor Bilal will talk about his new book, Shoot an Iraqi: Art, Life and Resistance Under the Gun, and how his experience as an Iraqi dissenter under Saddam Hussein has influenced his art practice.

APRIL 16: Steve Kurtz will lecture at the Law School in room 132 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. In 2004, Dr. Kurtz was charged with bioterrorism under the Patriot Act as a result of his art practice. For four years Dr. Kurtz fought a court battle which resulted in the eventual dismissal of all charges against him. Dr. Kurtz's lecture will recount this battle as well as issues of artistic and academic freedom.
