About increasing children's literacy skills. The workshop will be held at ETTAC's Knoxville office at 4918 N. Broadway. Participants will learn about effective strategies to develop literacy and learn ways to work with young children with disabilities to promote emerging literacy skills, including uses of assistive technology devices, modifications to home and classroom settings, and ways to integrate assistive technology devices and strategies into ordinary daily routines.

The first day will be led by Dan Herlihy, a national trainer on assistive technology and literacy strategies. Dan will be teaching about all the ways to build literacy skills. The second day will be led by Alice Wershing who will work with those who attend to create and develop products (a "Make and Take" activity), in conjunction with their personalized action plans for what they need to learn or do to maximize and support future literacy development in their children. Parents, speech therapists, teachers and social workers (Child and Family Studies, Early Childhood Development, Pre-school, Birth-3),
librarians, disability support groups (such as Down Syndrome, autism), STEP, and TEIS case workers are encouraged to attend.

A1LabArts and Big Ears Productions presents a concert series of innovative composers and sound artists. All concerts will be in the ArtSpace of A1LabArts, located in the Fireproof Building at 201 Randolph and Magnolia. These evenings, billed as a "True 21st Century Music Series" will cover distinctive genres which have arisen since the atomic expansion of abstract art in the 1950's. Shock value and "difficult music" are tired cliches; nuanced forms have evolved, influencing movie scores, pop stars, and children's toys. Each evening concert will focus on one nuanced genre, including Laptop, Musique Concrete, Vintage Analog, Ambient, Acoustic, and Net-based.

Featuring the works of Knoxville photographer and this year's Dogwood Art Festival Print Competition winner, Phil Savage. To celebrate "First Friday" on April 3, the Museum will stay open from 3-9 p.m. with free admission to all exhibits including the Downtown Knoxville, a New Perspective exhibition and the ETHS signature exhibition Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee. Phil Savage, a local gymnastics coach, has been taking pictures since he was a teenager. Interestingly enough, the Dogwood Art Festival print competition was the first art contest Savage had entered. His photograph "Woodruff's on Gay Street, Knoxville, TN" was selected by the public from hundreds of artwork pieces to become the official Dogwood Arts Festival's 2009 Limited Edition Fine Art Print. The photograph is a digitally colored and edited panoramic image of the Woodruff building on Gay Street, taken early one Sunday morning in downtown Knoxville. Prints of the winning photograph will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the show at the East Tennessee History Center. Phil Savage will be available for signing of the limited edition prints at the History Center from noon to 5 p.m. on April 17 and 18.
