UT Downtown Gallery, Ewing Gallery & The Architecture Reading Room: Japan International Artists

On view will be 324 works of art by 305 Society members who create in various media ranging from traditional Japanese calligraphy and ceramics to contemporary landscapes and abstraction. For most of these Japanese artists, this will be the first time their art has been exhibited in the United States. A goal of the Japan International Artist Society is to increase cultural awareness and understanding through international exhibitions of art. Throughout their 25 year history, member exhibitions have been held in museums in many countries, including Cuba, Spain, China, Canada, France, and Russia. Thirty of the Society members will visit Knoxville for the opening reception on Knoxville's First Friday, June 5, from 5-9 PM, to meet with the local community. Two Society members - ceramic artist ICHINOSE Sadato and master calligrapher TAKADA Bokuzan - will treat visitors to demonstrations of both traditional Japanese calligraphy and Japanese pottery throwing techniques. Refreshments will be served, admission is free, and a complimentary shuttle bus will travel between the Ewing Gallery on the UT campus and the Downtown Gallery, on South Gay Street, for the duration of the evening.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Artists on Location

Fourth annual "paint-out" and sale. On Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6, more than 50 local and regional artists will gather at four locations–downtown Knoxville, including Historic Market Square Mall, the Knoxville Zoo, UT Campus and Gardens, and Sequoyah Park–to paint and photograph local sites. The public is invited to watch the artists at work from 9am to 4pm on both days. Artworks created on Friday and Saturday will be displayed for sale in the museum's Great Hall on Sunday, June 8, from 1 to 4pm. Tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under, which includes lunch by Back Yard Burger and Marble Slab Creamery. Winners of cash awards will be chosen by juror Neely Crihfield Hyde, director of exhibits and digital media for the Association for Visual Arts in Chattanooga.

In addition to the lunch and sale on Sunday, children from second through eighth grades can participate in Quikdraw, with local artists teaching them how to paint en plein air (outside). There are no additional charges for Quikdraw materials and instruction.

Proceeds from "Artists on Location" will benefit the Knoxville Museum of Art in memory of Betsy Worden. Tickets are available at the door at the KMA on Sunday, June 8, 1–4pm.

Smoky Mountain Pottery Festival

The Smoky Mountain Pottery Festival brings together potters from around the region to exhibit, sell and demonstrate their craft. The festival emphasizes the finest pottery available in Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains, providing an opportunity to educate others about the long-time tradition of pottery and the various styles and methods used by potters in the past and present. The 2009 festival will highlight the 75th Anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains and the art that portrays how pottery has adapted throughout the Smokies.

On June 5-6, some of the highlights include 35 handpicked pottery booths, education programs, special talks and demonstrations with Hugh Bailey, Cherokee potter Melissa Maney, and special guest potter Peter Rose, wheel throwing and hand-building exhibitions, the children's tent, and horsehair and Raku firings with Joe Frank McKee.

Morristown Art Association: 39th Annual Juried Arts Show

The Morristown Art Association is an organization dedicated to the support of visual artists and their work. The MAA meets monthly at the Rose Center on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. Farragut Arts Council: Exhibition by Bailey Earith

A local fiber artist, Earith's exhibit showcases contemporary art quilts, 3-dimensional fabric vessels and an assortment of stunning fiber brooches. She is also displaying sample journals from the "Introduction to Journal Making" class she will be teaching at the Farragut Town Hall on Thursday, July 30 (class information at www.townoffarragut.org). Earith's artwork can be found in collections around the world and has been featured in numerous books and magazines.

Each month the work of an artist or group of artists is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall.
