Category: Kids, family and Science, nature

Got big plans for the weekend? Knoxville Zoo’s elephants sure do; they’re planning
an Easter egg hunt for Saturday and Sunday afternoons and keepers will be looking for a little help from visitors to hide giant papier-mâché treat-filled eggs in their exhibit.
The elephant egg hunts will take place at the Stokely African Elephant Preserve. Just prior to the hunt, at 4:00 p.m., a few lucky visitors will be asked to help hide the “eggs” in the exhibit for Tonka, Jana and Edie to find. Visitors can also watch them devour their huge, elephant-sized Easter baskets on Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. It’s a treat-filled weekend for just about all the animals at Knoxville Zoo. Zookeepers will hide papier-mâché and real eggs in exhibits throughout the day for the enjoyment of the animals. Special keeper chats are also planned for the weekend so visitors can watch some of the zoo’s egg-loving creatures in action while their
keepers share fun details about their charges. On Saturday, April 3, keeper chats are scheduled at the Black Bear Falls exhibit at 9:30 a.m., the North American river otter exhibit at 11:30 a.m. and Meerkat Lookout at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, chats are scheduled at the gibbon exhibit for 10:00 a.m., the red fox exhibit at 2:00 p.m. and in The Night Club, the zoo’s nocturnal exhibit featuring raccoons at 3:00 p.m. Special thanks to The Knoxville News Sentinel for their help with the animal enrichment items.
Knoxville Zoo is located off exit 392A from Interstate 40 and is open every day except Christmas Day. Currently, the zoo is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 9:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. Next-day admission is free after 3:00 p.m. For more information, please call 865.637.5331 ext. 300 or visit www.knoxville-zoo.org.

Direct from a highly-acclaimed run on Broadway, the Tony-nominated Soul of Shaolin will premier at the Eastern Shanghai Theater in April. A Chinese martial arts spectacular, Soul of Shaolin features over 30 Chinese performers skilled in the art of Shaolin Kung Fu and tells the touching story of Hui Guang (pronounced “whey gwong”), an orphan boy who is discovered by the legendary monks of the Shaolin Temple and is raised among them. The show debuted at New York's Marquis Theatre in January 2009 as part of the China on Broadway series of productions. It received rave reviews from many American critics, with the New York Post describing the show as "a dazzling display of skill", while the Associated Press called it "astonishing and amazing".

In addition to a spectacular show, the Eastern Shanghai Theater will feature state-of-the-art sound and lighting and a spectacular 198-square foot LED backdrop. According to the show's executive producer, Lizhi Zhao: “The story of Shaolin is timeless and appeals to all audiences, young and old.” People coming to the Smoky Mountains this year may not want to miss limited engagement of Soul of Shaolin.

She started painting in oils at an early age and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee. She has received top awards for her works of art nationally and internationally. Her use of the medium of encaustic came out of her father’s profession as a beekeeper.
