Athens Community Theater: Dearly Departed

Category: Theatre

By David Bottrell and Jessie Jones in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center in downtown Athens. The play is sponsored by Dick & Sylvia Pelley, G. David Brown & Jan Burleson, Art & Ellen Kimball, and Kathryn Hunter & The Wildman. In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and sometimes hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion: first-born Ray-Bud drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son is juggling financial ruin, monster kids, and his own infidelity; their spinster sister Delightful, copes with death as she does with life, by devouring junk food; and the neighbors add more than two cents. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral. Dearly Departed is directed by G. David Brown. The cast includes Bob Roseberry, Jan Burleson, Beth Harris, Sarah Maynard, Art Kimball, Karen Siklosi, Colby Dempsey, Jason Carusillo, Amanda Haun, Autumn Lowry, Sarah Philpott, Jeanne Williams, Grady Williams, and Steve Walker. Tickets for the opening night dinner theater on April 15 are $25 by reservation only. Doors open at 6:00 PM with a cash bar, dinner at 6:30 PM and show at 7:30 PM. Tickets for all other performances are $10 for adults, $8 for student. Showtime is 7:30 PM on April 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24. One matinee is offered at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 18. 2009-2010 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks series: In April the orchestra will open with Schumann's Symphony No. 4, a dramatic work that concisely encapsulates musical development from the mid-Romantic period. The Knoxville Choral Society will then join forces with the orchestra to perform Mozart's Requiem Mass, a sublime and powerful work, perhaps the most powerful rendering of a liturgical subject from the Classical era. Joining the orchestra and choral society will be soprano Jennifer Barnett, mezzo-soprano Lorraine DiSimone, tenor Andrew Skoog and bass-baritone Andrew Wentzel. KSO Music Director Lucas Richman will conduct the concert.

"Won’t Turn Back Tour" with Special Guests Will Hoge and Matt Hires
It’s an April 15th show, but Needtobreathe has already earned such a fervent following throughout the Southeast that tickets move quickly, so fair warning. The melodic rock the band is known for in songs like “Shine On” and “You Are Here,” express heartfelt emotions that connect with fans in a deeply individual and wholly universal way. In 2009, Needtobreathe released The Outsiders, which fans and critics agree could be their best yet. Info: 865-522-0832, www.knoxbijou.com

UT School of Art: MATT HEBERT, Public lecture and studio critiques

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Lecture, panel

“I am not content to think of furniture making as a static form of expression, neither as the creation of imagistic objects. In creating work that people can relate to in time and space, I introduce new forms of interactivity into standard furniture types. These new layers have varied from the playful to the somewhat sinister, by means as simple as the addition of playground balls to the more sophisticated integration of electronic circuits. I believe that working in this expanded field of studio-furniture - one that I have carved out for myself - offers something new to the field as a whole. My approach is one of many possible ways to make studio furniture more viable in the world of contemporary art.”

Matt Hebert received a BA in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MFA from California College of the Arts. His architectural background manifests itself in his current work, in which Hebert creates furniture and objects that activate and are influenced by the space and people around them - ideas inherent to architecture. Individual pieces focus on technology and its effects on the domestic and natural environment, generally adding layers of use and meaning to recognizable furniture forms to generate new modes of interaction between objects, the environment, and the user. Hebert has held teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is currently Assistant Professor of Furniture at San Diego State University, and his award winning work has been shown and collected internationally.
