The Palace Theater: Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time

Category: Music

"I think we're a bluegrass band with a rock 'n' roll attitude," says Larry Cordle. "I don't mean that we have a big show, but we try to pay attention to things that I don't hear a lot of bluegrass bands doing. This is really our own sound."
It would be an understatement to say that Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time's second Shell Point album, Songs From the Workbench, covers a wide range of musical territory. After all, the cover material alone includes "Rambler's Blues" (a song recorded in the '20s by Appalachian banjo player Dock Boggs), "Railroad Man" (previously recorded by the southern rock band, Blackfoot) and "Can't Let Go" (a Randy Weeks song later recorded by Lucinda Williams).
And then there are several songs written by Cordle, whose material has been recorded by George Strait, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Jones, Kathy Mattea, John Michael Montgomery, the Osborne Brothers, Trisha Yearwood, Alison Krauss and others. At last count, Cordle's songs have appeared on projects that have sold a combined total of more than 50 million records. Prime examples include Ricky Skaggs' "Highway 40 Blues" and Diamond Rio's "Mama Don't Forget to Pray for Me."
"Songs From the Workbench is a band-produced album," Cordle says. "They are just some of the finest players I've ever heard."
Bassist Terry Eldredge spent a decade performing with the Osborne Brothers, and he has recorded with Dolly Parton, George Jones, Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury and others. Cordle says, "Terry's playing has become an integral part of the sound. He's not afraid to take chances -- and I love that about his playing. His singing speaks for itself. There's a great thing between our voices that I just love." On Songs From the Workbench, Eldredge takes the lead vocal on a remake of the Don Williams/Bob McDill song, "I'm Not That Good at Goodbye."
Lonesome Standard Time's sound is also driven by guitarist Booie Beach and banjo ace David Talbot. "Booie is amazing," Cordle says. "Not only is his playing tasteful, it's unparalleled. You should see this guy in the studio. Give him a take or two and he's got it on tape. David's biggest influences are Earl Scruggs and J.D. Crowe, but he's really developed a cool style of his own. He's really in demand these days as a session player."
Cordle is especially pleased with the band's latest addition, 21-year-old fiddler Jenee Keener. "She's been playing since she was three," Cordle says. "I've never in my life heard a fiddle player who had better intonation at that age. That gal's got a big career coming. She's also a great singer. She sings the lead vocal on 'Can't Let Go.'"
Players of that caliber open up all sorts of musical possibilities. "I don't want anybody to take this the wrong way, but just the term 'bluegrass' is so limiting," Cordle says. "Yeah, we're a bluegrass band, but there's just so much that can be done within the realm of acoustic music."

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, a sponsor of the 60th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, is showcasing the watercolors, acrylics and drawings of Bob George, winner of the 2009 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage Art Contest. Bob George relocated to Sevierville, Tennessee in 2002 after a career in Washington, D.C. as an illustrator, commercial artist and art director. Bob, a native of Key West, Florida, studied at the Ringling School of Art. His artwork has been featured at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, the White House, Pentagon and U.S. Park Service Visitor Centers. Bob’s winning entry, “Bloodroot” was selected as part of a national juried competition and has been used as the Pilgrimage’s promotional image for 2010. Criteria for submission is that the artist’s primary subject included botanically accurate depictions of a spring flowering plant (or plants) native to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “Bob’s skills as an illustrator and a painter are exquisite. It is evident that he has a strong relationship with and has mastered his media. His work brings the beauty and composition of nature to life on paper – the rendering of a simple stone becomes a captivating visual. We are proud to showcase Bob’s range of artworks and encourage you to come and enjoy this wonderful exhibit,” says Karen Green, Gallery Coordinator.
