Frank H. McClung Museum: Shells: Gems of the Sea exhibition

1731.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Collecting shells has been a pastime of many, young and old, for centuries. It is only when collecting becomes a passion rather than a pastime that the finest examples are sought, and the subject is researched in detail. Such is the case with this collection, one of the country's finest, assembled by local physician Dr. Peter Stimpson. Focusing on six families of marine gastropods - cowries, cones, conchs, harps, volutes, and olives - the collection includes over 1,000 species listed in the "Registry of World Record Size Shells". Dr. Stimpson has made a portion of his collection available for public enjoyment in this exhibition.

Knoxville Zoo: Zoofari 2010

1364.jpg

Category: Festivals, special events and Fundraisers

Zoofari, East Tennessee’s “wildest” gala, promises to transport guests to the Orient to honor the Year of the Tiger and also the rarest tiger in U.S zoos. Proceeds from this year’s event will help launch an initiative to conserve the highly endangered Malayan tiger and establish a breeding program sanctioned by the Species Survival Plan (SSP). In its 23rd year, Zoofari is Knoxville Zoo’s largest annual fundraiser. Drawing over 500 attendees each year, this one-of-a-kind fete invites guests to mingle with some of the exotic creatures who reside at the zoo before enjoying an elegant dinner catered by Copper Cellar. Perhaps the most anticipated highlight of the evening is the renowned Zoofari Live Auction conducted by Sam Furrow, featuring once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as the chance to attend the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders’ meeting, watch a Pittsburgh Steelers home game from the Owner’s Box at Heinz Field or be in the 25 member audience for the live, tell-all taping of the popular reality show “The Bachelorette” in Los Angeles, to name a few. The evening finishes off with the band Kung Pow providing plenty of 80’s tunes to keep guests on the dance floor. With fewer than 500 Malayan tigers estimated to remain in the wild,
Knoxville Zoo hopes to use funds raised at Zoofari to make a significant contribution to the conservation of these endangered cats. Proceeds from the event also helps provide care for the more than 800 animals living at the zoo as well. Tickets must be purchased in advance to attend the event. For more information or to purchase tickets for Zoofari, please visit the zoo’s web site at www.knoxville-zoo.org or call (865) 637-5331, ext. 300. Tickets are $175 each, and dress for the event is “ca-zoo-al”.

Bijou Theatre: Dark Hollow Band

1648.jpg

Category: Music

With special guest Malcomb Holcombe. One day in September, 1999, on the front porch of a house on Dark Hollow Road in East Tennessee, with a bucket and two sticks from the front yard, Gene Beffre sat down and banged out a beat as Randall Kent Wilkerson played and sang his songs. Dark Hollow Band evolved from that simple moment. In 2000, John Gillespie came along and sweetened the sound with his flute and squeezebox. Later that same year the inimitable Rod Erwin brought his ingeniously subtle, yet powerful bass into the mix. Next came Dave Patterson who would expand and warp the sound with his screaming electric guitar. One by one, as if by design, each member would appear and bring their own unique fingerprint to the mix. At one point they had up to eleven band members! The end result would be an eclectic mix of everything from gospel to folk to blues to country to screamin' rock n' roll. Admission: $12.00 advance, $15.00 at the door - plus applicable service fees.

UT Downtown Gallery: Salvador Dali Illustrates Dante’s Divine Comedy

1792.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Art and literary enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to see a literary masterpiece come to life through the work of the late world-renowned artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) in “Dali Illustrates Dante’s Divine Comedy” on display at the UT Downtown Gallery. The exhibition represents Dali’s visual interpretation of Dante’s literary masterpiece The Divine Comedy, chronicling Dante Alighieri’s symbolic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Salvador Dalí was one of the most well known of the surrealist artists who concentrated on depicting the unconscious and subconscious mind. Dalí labored for nine years to produce a series of 100 watercolors as illustrations to Dante’s classic epic, with each print depicting a verse from the poem. His paintings were reproduced by Jean Estrade of Les Heured Claires and released as a limited edition print suite in honor of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s birth in 1265. This collection of work was generously donated to the University of Tennessee’s Ewing Gallery by UT alumnus and businessman Gary Johnson.
"I had two objectives in donating this collection to the Ewing Gallery. First,
to provide UT art students with first hand access to one of the greatest works of art by one of the 20th century's greatest artists. The magnitude of Dali's Divine Comedy Suite is difficult to comprehend without the opportunity to personally see the number of pieces, the breadth of the expressions, and the spiritual interpretation of Dante's work. Second, to ensure that a complete collection of the Divine Comedy Suite is preserved for future art students. A great number of the complete suites have been and continue to be sold off as individual pieces, this results in the decline in the availability of complete suites each year." The UT Downtown Gallery will be presenting all 100 prints from this historic series.

UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37902. Hours: Wednesday-Friday: 11AM - 6PM; Saturday: 10AM - 3PM. For information: 865-673-0802, http://web.utk.edu/~downtown
