“The Ballad of Robin Hood” is a thrilling and funny adaptation of the Robin Hood legend. When we meet young Rob of Lockesley, he has been thrown off his family’s land, and his father has been imprisoned. But the boy quickly gains fame by winning an archery tournament and adopts the outlaw name of “Robin Hood.” He also manages to make the Sheriff of Nottingham his lifelong enemy. The audience sees how Robin Hood met some of his famous “Merry Men,” such as Little John, Will Scarlet,
Friar Tuck, Ellen-A-Dale, and Sir Michael of Lea. When the evil King John seizes his father’s throne, Robin and his friends vow to fight John’s injustices throughout all of Sherwood Forest. Just as King John begins to turn the tide against Robin Hood, a mysterious Knight arrives from the East during a dramatic climax. The play is told in a captivating, easy-to-understand classical style, complete with edge-of-your-seat combat with broadswords and staffs.

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents Artists on Location, its fifth annual “paint-out” and sale. On Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5, more than 40 local and regional artists will come together to paint and photograph in downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee Gardens. The public is invited to watch the artists at work from 9am to 4pm on both days.

Artworks created on Friday and Saturday will be displayed for sale in the museum’s Great Hall on Sunday, June 6, from 4-6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public and will feature a “Taste of the City” with specialty items from Regas, Nama, S & W Grand, Tomato Head, Magpies, Old Mill Kettle Corn, Cabot Cheese, and Chez Liberty. A cash bar will be available with wine, beer, soft drinks, and water. Winners of cash awards will be chosen by juror Neely Crihfield Hyde of Chattanooga. Proceeds from “Artists on Location” will benefit the Knoxville Museum of Art in memory of Betsy Worden.

The International Biscuit Festival is a downtown event that celebrates the heritage of home cooking. The event begins at 5:00 pm June 4th with First Friday Biscuit Art openings and performances. Southern Fried will take place at venues all over the old city and downtown area of Knoxville, TN. The bouts will occur in the art district with late night events in the Old City and Market Square. The Southern Fried Poetry Slam was started by Allan Wolf in 1993 in Asheville, North Carolina. This performance poetry competition, which travels to a different southern city annually, has grown into one of the largest poetry convention in the nation, second only to the Poetry Slam, Inc.'s National Poetry Slam, which started in 1990. Over four days, teams and independent spoken word artists from our Southern Cities will compete head to head on local stages. They prepare for months in order to be on stage for mere minutes. The first exhibition will spotlight the works of two member artists: clay work by Gray Bearden and paintings by Suzanne Jack. The PEANUTS strips have made museum visits both nationally and internationally including a monumental exhibit in 1990 at the Louvre in Paris. Forty of Snoopy’s Flying Ace adventures will be on displayed at the American Museum of Science and Energy along with fine art print examples of the Flying Ace by Tom Everhart, the only artist authorized by Charles Schulz to artistically render PEANUTS. A selection of collectibles of unique Flying Ace merchandise and marketing items over the years will also be displayed along with items related to Charles Schulz and the rest of the PEANUTS characters.

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.
