Arts & Culture Alliance: "Archetypes" by Kenneth M. Moffett

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition entitled “Archetypes” by Kenneth M. Moffett, Knoxville architect and artist. The exhibition title refers to a set of diagrammatic master plans derived from work done over the years in collaboration with others in an architectural firm. This portion of the exhibition concerns a theory of coordinated aesthetic order embodied in the plans on display. In their original form, the plans were prepared for actual exposition parks and fairgrounds. The remainder of the exhibition consists of work by the artist in a variety of media, including drawings and acrylic paintings. These too, in some cases, are efforts to transcend conventional illustrative composition and achieve something more epitomized or “archetypal.”

“Archetypes” will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on November 5 from 5:00-9:00 PM. On display at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, November 6, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. 2346.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Film and Music

Program includes live performances of classical jazz standards by Lance Owen and the
Lancelots; Swinging with the Soundies, a screening of rare jazz-themed shorts from the 1940s; and a special exhibition of work by local artist Joe Letitia.

Sometimes humorous, sometimes a bit naughty, always hot-and-swinging, the
jazz shorts of the 1940s were the precursors to the modern music video. These
amazing three-minute shorts, or “soundies,” were produced to be shown on the
Mills Panoram, a movie jukebox found in local taverns, arcades, and soda
fountains. For the price of a dime, one could view musical motion picture
performances by such jazz legends as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Nat
“King” Cole. The Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound’s screening of Swinging with the Soundies, a selection of some of the wildest jazz and swing soundies ever made, shown from original 16mm film prints, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Museum of East Tennessee History and will offer today’s
viewers the opportunity to relive these memorable jazz and swing performances.
Look out for Count Basie, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, and
many more, as they “do their thing” one more time!

A pre-screening, live musical performance by local jazz legends Lance Owens and the Lancelots will begin at 6:30 p.m. So, arrive early to hear Owens and the gang, as they serve up some hot jazz standards from the golden era of swing.

Also, arrive early to visit the Museum of East Tennessee History’s current exhibitions with FREE admission. In addition, the work of local artist Joe Letitia will be on view in the lobby of the Museum of East Tennessee History.

Admission to the First Friday classic jazz celebration and exhibitions at the Museum of East Tennessee History is FREE and open to the public. Refreshments will be available in the lobby of the museum. East Tennessee Historical Society, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Museum hours: Monday-Friday: 9AM-4PM; Saturday: 10AM-4PM; Sunday: 1-5PM. For information: 865-215-8824, www.easttnhistory.org
