Pellissippi State: “Historia de México” Exhibit

Cutline: Ángel Bracho’s “The Dictatorship is Stopped” is one of several pieces on display in Pellissippi State’s “Historia de México” exhibit, Feb. 21-March 4.

Pellissippi State Community College is one of only two venues in the state to host a traveling historical art exhibit from Mexico. Slated for display Feb. 21-March 4, “Historia de México” features engravings that celebrate Mexico’s 1810 independence from Spain and its 1910 revolution.

The artwork depicts various stages of Mexican history as seen from the point of view of the artists. The pieces include technical descriptions and brief commentaries on the historical significance of each work.

The Tennessee Consortium for International Studies, whose headquarters are at Pellissippi State, and the Ministry of Culture of Michoacán, a Mexican state, are sponsoring the exhibit.

Exhibit hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Friday, 9-noon. The exhibit is in Pellissippi State’s Bagwell Center for Media and Art gallery, on the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra: Winter Concerts

Members of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association are gearing up for their second performance of the season.

The Jr. Philharmonia, Philharmonia, Sinfonia and Youth Chamber Orchestra will perform a FREE concert on Monday, February 21 at 7:00 PM at the Tennessee Theatre.

The Youth Orchestra will perform a FREE concert on Sunday, February 27 at 7:00 PM at the Tennessee Theatre. This performance will feature the winners of the 2010 Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition: Cameron Lugo performing Allegro molto appassionato from Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 64, and Jerry Feng, performing Allegro con brio from Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37. Also on the program, the Youth Orchestra will perform “Russian Sailor’s Dance” from Gliere’s The Red Poppy and Sibelius’ Karelia Suite.

The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association is currently celebrating its 37th season. The orchestras rehearse on Monday evenings at West Valley Middle School. The Youth Orchestra Association will perform four concerts throughout the 2010-2011 season. All four performances will take place at the Tennessee Theatre and are FREE and open to the public. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony League and Knox County Schools sponsor the Association.

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: oncertmaster Candidate Joseph Meyer Concert

For the first time in nearly 30 years the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is searching for a new concertmaster. The second of three finalists, Joseph Meyer, will join the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra during the week of February 20 for auditions which includes performing with the KSO at the Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Concerts on February 24 and 25 at the Tennessee Theatre, as well as a solo recital on February 21 at the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the Pellissippi State Community College campus. This recital will take place at 8:00 PM and is FREE and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Patrons wishing to reserve their tickets to this recital can call the KSO Box Office at 865-291-3310. Violinist Joseph Meyer is an active soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader who has been garnering critical acclaim throughout the country. Currently Mr. Meyer holds positions as concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and associate concertmaster of the Colorado Music Festival. Joseph will perform two Chopin’s Nocturne, Op. Posthumous, transcribed for violin by Nathan Milstein, Messiaen’s Theme et Variations, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 in F Major, Op. 24, “Spring,” J.S. Bach’s Chaconne from Partita # 2 and his own arrangement of Alard’s La Traviata Fantasy for Violin and Piano, Op. 38. Accompanying Meyer on piano will be Kevin Class, Director of Collaborative Piano and Music Director/Conductor of the Opera Theatre at the University of Tennessee.
The first of the three finalists in the running for the position of KSO Concertmaster, Gabriel Lefkowitz, performed with the orchestra in January and the third candidate Elina Lev will join the orchestra the week of May 15. These finalists were chosen from a national audition held this past Spring and Fall.

Athens Community Theater: Annie the Musical

The Athens Community Theater will present ANNIE, book by Thomas Meehan, Music by Charles Strouse, and Lyrics by Martin Charnin, in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center. The musical tells the story of Annie, the spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents who abandoned her years earlier on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. The large cast of 33 singers, dancers, actors, and tumblers will bring to life all of the familiar and show stopping numbers from the musical, including Hard Knock Life, Fully Dressed, Tomorrow, Maybe, Easy Street and more.

Tickets for ANNIE are on sale now at $14 for adults, $8 for students. Show dates and times are February 17-19, 24-26 at 7:00 PM and February 20 & 27 at 2:00 PM. East Tennessee Historical Society: Roads I’ve Traveled: The Life’s Work of Jim Gray

For almost five decades, Jim Gray has painted in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains, creating a body of work that captures, according to the artist, "the ever changing pattern of light and shadow [that moves] across the ancient faces of the Smokies." The retrospective exhibition, Roads I've Traveled, showcases these East Tennessee-inspired landscapes, as well as additional selections from Gray's life's work, including wildlife, floral, and marine paintings and assorted sculptures in bronze.

Beck Cultural Exchange Center: We Shall Not be Moved exhibition

Saturday February 5, 2011 at 6pm, The Beck Cultural Exchange Center will be hosting the Opening Ceremony of the annual Beck Cultural Exchange Center Black History Month Exhibit entitled, WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED!; an extensive collection of historical artifacts from the actual Civil Rights Era touring from the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. This brilliant and yet delicate display is celebrating the 51st Anniversary of the Tennessee Civil Rights Sit-In Movement and is scheduled to tour across the United States beginning right here in Knoxville, Tennessee! The WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED Exhibit contains tables, bar stools, signs, pamphlets, booklets, magazines, postcards, photos, and a host of other original treasures that have been preserved from the actual Sit-In Movement during the 1960’s and beyond!
