Knoxville Early Music Project: Concerts of sacred Italian music

KEMP, the Knoxville Early Music Project, presents two concerts of sacred Italian music from the 17th century. The first concert is on February 13, at 7:30 p.m., at All Saints Episcopal Church in Morristown ($7 adults/$5 students). The second concert is on February 20, at 4:00 p.m at First Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Tennessee (Free Will Offering). The program features sacred music by some of the most accomplished 17th century Italian composers such as Alessandro Grandi, Francesco Cavalli, and Isabella Leonarda, as well as instrumental music by Antonio Bertali and Biagio Marini. For this concert, KEMP has invited extra singers and instrumentalists to create a large ensemble of voices, theorbo, baroque guitar, harpsichord, viola da gamba, and violins.
KEMP was founded in 1991 and has entertained and inspired audiences throughout the Southeast. The current core members are J. Ashley Burell(organ and harpsichord), Maria Rist (soprano), Matt Sharp (baritone), Ann Stierli (bass viol), and Thomas Tallant (lute, guitar). The group is joined by Elizabeth Farr (violin), Mary Ann Fennell (violin), Terryl Oliver (alto), and John Tilson (tenor). GO! Contemporary Dance Works: The Barbarosa

GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present an original ballet based on the story of the infamous female pirate, Anne Bonny. Blending ballet, modern and aerial dance with cultural dance forms such as African, Flamenco and Capoeria. Fencing and swordfighting will also be incorporated into the choreography in telling Anne’s story of life on the high seas. Knoxville Museum of Art: Peter Sarkisian: Video Works, 1996-2008

Sarkisian explores the spatial and perspective possibilities of video, film, and sculpture through multi-media works that challenge perceptions of reality and illusion. This retrospective exhibition features signature works and conveys how the artist has considered and resolved various approaches to integrating video into temporal and spatial experiences.

Knoxville Opera: Manon

The Knoxville Opera premiere of Massenet’s lush French masterpiece Manon, which ranks alongside Carmen as one of the most sensuous grand operas ever conceived. The production will star the riveting Talise Trevigne, returning to Knoxville from 2009’s Rigoletto in the story of an insatiable, bewitching seductress who ruins her life in pursuit of love, fame and fortune in Paris. Joining Trevigne is internationally renowned Spanish tenor Israel Lozano from Madrid for performances on Friday February 11 at 8:00 PM and Sunday February 13 at 2:30 PM. Veteran Metropolitan Opera bass Andrew Wentzel (the UT Vols’ “Anthem Manâ€) is featured as the Count.

Farragut Town Hall: Showcase of Knoxville Private Schools

The Town of Farragut Arts Council will sponsor the 2011 Private Schools Art Show this February at the Farragut Town Hall. East Tennessee Historical Society: Roads I’ve Traveled: The Life’s Work of Jim Gray

For almost five decades, Jim Gray has painted in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains, creating a body of work that captures, according to the artist, "the ever changing pattern of light and shadow [that moves] across the ancient faces of the Smokies." The retrospective exhibition, Roads I've Traveled, showcases these East Tennessee-inspired landscapes, as well as additional selections from Gray's life's work, including wildlife, floral, and marine paintings and assorted sculptures in bronze.
