GO! Contemporary Dance Works: The Barbarosa

GO! Contemporary Dance Works will present an original ballet based on the story of the infamous female pirate, Anne Bonny. Blending ballet, modern and aerial dance with cultural dance forms such as African, Flamenco and Capoeria. Fencing and swordfighting will also be incorporated into the choreography in telling Anne’s story of life on the high seas. There will be a Gala prior to the February 12th show at The Square Room, Market Square. Call 539-2475 for more information or reservations.

Knoxville Bonsai Society Winter Bonsai Display

The Knoxville Bonsai Society will hold its second annual Winter Bonsai Display in the Garden Club Room at the Knoxville Botanical Garden. Displaying in Winter allows for the viewer to see the delicate structure of deciduous bonsai like Japanese Maples and American Hornbeams, which can be much more impressive than with all the leaves in place. The largest bonsai show in Japan, Kokufu Ten, is also held about this same time each year in February and has been for over 80 years as it is considered the best time to display bonsai. Members of the KBS from Nashville to Asheville, but mostly from Knoxville will show bonsai for your viewing pleasure.
Please come and enjoy some of the nicest bonsai in the region free of charge!

Knoxville Zoo: Job Fair

Knoxville Zoo is looking for friendly and energetic people at the annual Job Fair,
which will be held at the zoo’s Lee Congleton Conference Center. Seasonal positions are available in the zoo’s Guest Services department, including retail sales, food
service, carousel and camel ride operations and membership and ticket sales. The zoo is also hiring for positions that will assist with educational programs and in the Clayton Family Kids Cove contact yard and playground. First-round interviews will be conducted at the Job Fair. Some positions will begin work immediately and others will start on a staggered schedule throughout the late winter and early spring. Those interested in attending the Job Fair should come to the Ranger Station, to the right of the zoo’s main entrance, for directions to the Lee Congleton Conference Center. Most positions require applicants who are 16-years or older, although some positions are available for applicants who are 15-years-old. Seniors and retirees are encouraged to apply as well. Weekend and holiday hours are required. Knoxville Zoo is an equal-opportunity employer and a Tennessee Drug-Free Workplace. Drug testing is

Ijams Nature Center: GhostBird - The Movie

Whatever Happened to the Ivory-billed Woodpecker? Ijams presents a special screening of the 2009 documentary Ghost Bird by Scott Crocker. The highly acclaimed film looks at the recent rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in Arkansas and the impact it had on the people in the small town of Brinkly. Plus, author Stephen Lyn Bales and Nancy Tanner will be on hand to talk about and sign copies of the book Ghost Birds that details the field research of her late husband Jim in the late 1930s.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Peter Sarkisian: Video Works, 1996-2008

Sarkisian explores the spatial and perspective possibilities of video, film, and sculpture through multi-media works that challenge perceptions of reality and illusion. This retrospective exhibition features signature works and conveys how the artist has considered and resolved various approaches to integrating video into temporal and spatial experiences.

Knoxville Opera: Manon

The Knoxville Opera premiere of Massenet’s lush French masterpiece Manon, which ranks alongside Carmen as one of the most sensuous grand operas ever conceived. The production will star the riveting Talise Trevigne, returning to Knoxville from 2009’s Rigoletto in the story of an insatiable, bewitching seductress who ruins her life in pursuit of love, fame and fortune in Paris. Joining Trevigne is internationally renowned Spanish tenor Israel Lozano from Madrid for performances on Friday February 11 at 8:00 PM and Sunday February 13 at 2:30 PM. Veteran Metropolitan Opera bass Andrew Wentzel (the UT Vols’ “Anthem Manâ€) is featured as the Count.
