Marble Springs: Statehood Days Living History Weekend

In celebration of the birth of Tennessee as the 16th state to join the Union, we will have Living History demonstrations and militia drills during this two day event.
Some of East Tennessee’s most important cultural heritage sites, including those that comprise Historic Homes of Knoxville, are partnering to celebrate Statehood Day on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. All of the sites are historically significant in Tennessee’s becoming the 16th state in 1796. Other than Historic Homes of Knoxville, which includes James White’s Fort, Marble Springs, Ramsey House, Mabry-Hazen House, Blount Mansion and Crescent Bend, the celebration partnership will also include the Sequoyah Museum and Fort Loudoun State Park in Vonore, TN. Each individual site will celebrate the birth of Tennessee by offering free tours to the public in addition to special events. Historic Homes of Knoxville: Statehood Day

The historic homes of Knoxville, as well as other cultural sites will participate in Statehood Day. All historic homes are open free to the public to celebrate the journey of Tennessee becoming the 16th state in 1796.

Fort Loudoun State Historic Site: Garrison Weekend

Garrison Weekend is a time when the daily lives of the men, women and children of Fort Loudoun are recreated for the public. On these days, park visitors will find living history re-enactors in costume at Fort Loudoun. Visitors can view an 18th century infirmary, the soldier’s barracks, the commanders quarters, blacksmith shop and a Cherokee encampment.

Ijams Nature Center: "Jo's Grove" Grand Opening

Special Event! Join us for the Grand Opening of Jo’s Grove, a natural play area at Ijams. This area was specifically designed to support our First Child in the Woods program, which emphasizes the spontaneous learning that occurs when children play outdoors. It is a place that will spark creativity and surprise the senses. As part of this grand opening event, we will be hosting the first-ever Fairy House and Gnome Home Competition, where participants can create their very own magical structure for their woodland friends. This event will conclude with a fairy tea party, complete with whimsical refreshments. Children are even invited to come dressed as fairies, gnomes, elves, goblins or any other magical woodland creature! Prizes will be given for best costumes and for construction of the best fairy house and/or gnome home. This event is free to the public; there is a small fee to build a fairy house or gnome home.

Bijou Theatre Center: Black Lillies

The Black Lillies return to the Bijou Theatre with special guest Tift Merritt opening the show. The band’s previous performance in January sold out in advance and celebrated the release of the new album 100 Miles of Wreckage, which is quickly climbing the national and international charts (at the time of this writing, the album is #12 on the Americana charts nationwide and #33 on the International Roots Music charts).

Opening the show is Tift Merritt, a North Carolina native whose first album landed on Time Magazine’s and New Yorker’s top ten lists and was called the best debut of the year in any genre by the Associated Press.

Knoxville Zoo: Close Encounters of the Wild Kind
