Artist Anne Freels brings a colorful, contemporary flair to the traditional Appalachian folk art of making corn shuck dolls.
Her new book, Making Colorful Corn Shuck Dolls, is full of practical advice, plus suggestions on personalizing dolls with creativity.
The Museum of Appalachia will host a book-signing on Sunday, March 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Freels will autograph copies of her book, which will be available for purchase. She’ll also offer her unique dolls and doll-making kits.

Over the course of one weekend last March, there were Jedi warriors and all sorts of other characters roaming the campus of Pellissippi State Community College. The scene will be repeated this year, during the second annual Pellicon convention. Pellicon is a nonprofit, multi-fandom convention for fans of anime, gaming, role playing and sci-fi. The event features presentations by faculty from Pellissippi State’s Media Technologies program. Pellicon is hosted by S.U.R.G.E. (Sci-fi, Ultima-anime, Role playing, Games and Everything else), a Pellissippi State club focused on multi-fandom—a collective of fans of sci-fi, games and the like—and hobbies. A wide range of guests, panels, contests and events will be featured at Pellicon. Special guests include the MidSouth Garrison of the 501st Legion, a group that celebrates the “Star Wars” films through costuming, and My Parents Favorite Music, a band centered on gaming and other “nerd culture.”

Panel topics include Cosplay, Lolita fashion, anime, ’90s cartoons, Doctor Who, Xadune live-action role playing, the Legend of Zelda, Xbox Achievement Hunting and more. Contests include a Cosplay competition, nerd Jeopardy and Nintendo trivia. A game room will be open all weekend for free play, and there will be tournaments for games such as Marvel VS Capcom 3, Street Fighter IV and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. There also will be a dealer room where artists sell their wares.

All Pellicon activities take place at the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Panels and other activities take place in the Goins Building, with faculty presentations being offered in the Bagwell Center for Media and Art. March 23 will mark the opening night of another world premiere by regional playwright Lisa Soland. This time she also sits in the director’s chair, directing Pellissippi State students alongside other local actors in her new series of one-acts called The Ladder Plays, in which the playwright explores the ups and downs of being human.

Lisa Soland’s world premiere of The Ladder Plays is a collection of short comedies and dramas that all take place on or around ladders. Included are stories of eloping, a suicide off the letter “H” in the Hollywood sign, and even a one-act called “Spatial Disorientation” – about the last moments in the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren as they wait to take off in inclement weather to fly to Martha’s Vineyard.

The Ladder Plays opens at the Clayton Performing Arts Center at Hardin Valley on the campus of Pellissippi State College, March 23 and plays Friday and Saturdays at 8 pm through March 31, with a Sunday performance on April 1 at 2 pm. This musical follows the woodland adventures of two amphibious friends, a worrywart toad and a perky frog, with their assorted colorful hopping, crawling and flying companions, over the course of a year. This is a great show for kids. RSCC Theatre, Harriman, General Admission $10, Students $7.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Several Silences March 16-May 20, 2012.
Several Silences presents installations, videos, sculptures, and drawings by a diverse selection of contemporary artists from around the world who approach the theme of silence in distinctly individual ways. This group exhibition explores various kinds of silence—meditative, ambient, memorial, etc.—and calls attention to the rarity of the absence of sound in our growing “culture of distraction.”

The Knoxville Watercolor Society presents “Illuminations”—a mix of recent transparent watercolor paintings by the Knoxville Watercolor Society.
