Cresthill Cinema Club: Follow the Boys
Category: Film
Hi-de-ho, Dear Cresthill Cinema Club Members – and Future Members!
Get this, hep cats: our next program will be taking place on Friday, September 4 at 8 PM, we'll be concluding our Second World War tribute with the rarely-shown musical extravaganza, Follow the Boys (1944).
During World War II, most of the major film studios produced all-star morale boosters, boasting a string of marvelous tunes, performed by top artists of the day – and held together by the slimmest of plots. Follow the Boys follows that blueprint, as it tells the story of Tony West, an ex-vaudevillian dancer who becomes a Hollywood star through his association with dancer Gloria Vance. Tony marries Gloria and goes on to help form the Hollywood Victory Committee, an organization that will bring entertainment to troops stationed all over the world.
George Raft and Vera Zorina portray Tony and Gloria. Appearing as themselves is an astonishing array of showbiz greats, doing the songs and routines that made them famous.
Our location: The spacious clubhouse of the Windover Apartments. The journey there will take you to Cheshire Drive (off Kingston Pike, near the Olive Garden); going down Cheshire, turn right at the Windover Apartments sign, then go to the third parking lot on your right, next to the pool. There, the building that houses the clubhouse and offices of the Windover will be just a few steps away!
I sure as heck hope you'll be trucking on down to the Cresthill Cinema Club on September 4, 8:00PM.

Opening on First Friday at UnCorked, 28 Market Square in downtown Knoxville: (865) 524-2224
Kesha "Kiki" Broyhill has been painting for only four years. Not professionally trained, rather intuitively naturalistic in approach, her work defies categorization. Art Market Gallery: Recent works by Gary Dagnan and Larry Gabbard
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
An opening reception for the featured artists will be held during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk beginning at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 4. There will be complimentary refreshments along with jazz performed by Kelvin Walters.
Most of Gary Dagnan’s oil paintings are of the mountains, hills, lakes and structures of the East Tennessee area. He is inspired by the changing light and colors that come from distinctly different seasons of the South, explaining that he is more interested in the aesthetics of a scene than with documenting a specific place: “I want my paintings to express the emotional and spiritual connection that I have with nature,” he says. With his work in more than 400 private and public collections, the Jasper, TN, native has had 18 solo shows, and his works have been in many national, state and regional art shows throughout the United States. Larry Gabbard enjoys fast-firing techniques that create a rich variety of textures and colors on bisque clay. "I find the unexpected marks made when clay, heat, and smoke interact to be among the most intriguing and challenging of finishes to perfect and reproduce," he says. While most of his elegant pottery is wheel thrown, he seeks out alternative methods, among them raku, horse hair, saggar, obvara, and pit firing. The Cincinnati, OH, transplant began his pottery career after moving to Kingston in 1999. He attends workshops of well known potters as well as classes at renowned educational institutions to learn more and refine his skills.
Owned and operated by more than 60 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is a few doors away from Mast General store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Art Market Gallery, 422 S. Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37902. Hours: Tu-Th & Sa 11-6, Fri 11-9, Su 1-5. Information: 865-525-5265, www.artmarketgallery.net

Change is in the air for Francis Henshall, who was recently fired and looking to make his mark. Circumstances find him suddenly working for not one, but two bosses. Faced with the distractions of a buxom bookkeeper, a self-important actor, and select members of the local criminal community, all the while fighting mounting mistaken identities and confusion, Francis goes out of his way to serve both his “guvnors” while keeping his moonlighting a secret. Clayton Center for the Arts: "Seeing in Black-and-White"
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Photos by Paula Campbell in the Blackberry Farm Gallery
Seeing in Black-and-White consists of three series which rely on traditional black-and-white photography to explore contemporary themes. While the ‘re-contextualizing’ of image scraps from fashion locates the subject in the surreal world of fashion – the individual photographs break from the commercial intent and reference a personal narrative.
