This exhibition will take the viewer through the evolution of Himalayan artistic styles from the 8th century through the present. From gilded statues of deities, to complex and colorful paintings of religious figures, the objects in the exhibit explore how trade, travel, and the evolution of Buddhism helped foster a strong artistic tradition that continues today.

Exploring the rich history of Himalayan style art in a chronological fashion, the Tibetan bronzes and paintings featured will progressively lead the viewer through the major stylistic developments that took place and provide an introduction to the techniques used to produce these works as well as to the complex religious iconography depicted in them.

Arrowmont invites the public to view Time, a collaborative exhibit by Blair Clemo and Jason Hackett, in the Geoffrey A. Gallery. The exhibit showcases an array of utilitarian and sculptural ceramic works measuring time through developed surfaces, symbolic image, and historic and geologic form. Clemo’s work explores time as a significant venture in labor while Hackett’s work is intuitively developed around the concept of time.

Blair Clemo is an Assistant Professor of Craft and Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his MFA in Ceramics at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University in 2010. Originally from Doylestown Pennsylvania, Clemo spent many years out west studying ceramics and working at small production potteries in Idaho and Montana. He has been an Artist-in-Residence at The Northern Clay Center (Minneapolis, MN), the Da Wang Culture Highland (Shenzhen, China), the Zentrum für Keramik (Berlin, Germany) and The International Ceramics Studio (Kecskemét, Hungary) funded by the 2013 NCECA International Partnership Grant. Jason Hackett is currently the Studio Manager for the Department of Craft and Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, the same place from which he received his Master’s degree in Fine Arts in 2005. Prior to obtaining his Master’s degree, Jason held studio management positions for Jun Kaneko and Pewabic Pottery’s Education Studios. His artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Alexandria Museum of Art, San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, The Mobile Museum of Art, The Virginia Museum of Fine Art, The Taubman Museum of Art, The City Museum of Aviero in Portugal, Galateea Gallery in Bucharest, and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. Jason was awarded the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship in 2013 for his collaged ceramic works.

Knox County Public Library is hosting the 12th year of Movies on Market Square, which is presented by Lusid Media, to highlight its vast collection of movies and music with more than 25,000 DVDs representing 13,000 titles. The Sights and Sounds Department at Lawson McGhee Library has one of the broadest physical collections of film and music of any public library in the Southeast.

Encore Theatrical Company presents the award-winning smash comedy and regional premiere of “One Man, Two Guvnors.” Get ready to laugh out loud with this uproarious knockabout comedy is set in 1963 London as one man tries to serve, and hoodwink, two employers at the same time. Easily confused and distractedly hungry, Francis Henshall takes on two jobs resulting in two bosses. One “guvnor” is a mobster and the other is a criminal who is on the run. Neither is aware of the other, and Francis goes to extremes to prevent them from discovering each other and his deception. Throw in a sweet and beautiful but dimwitted young woman, a vain actor, a woman disguised as her murdered twin brother, a crooked lawyer, and a couple of level hoodlumbs, and it’s almost more than one man can govern.

Based on “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni, playwright Richard Bean gives us a lighthearted show that is a guaranteed evening of laughs and entertainment. The play opened at the National Theatre in London in May 2011 and soon moved to Broadway. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards and James Corden won the Tony for Best Actor in a Play.

The Lyric Theatre Company will debut “Hemingway’s Ghost” by Robert Cranny. The audience will meet Hemingway, the man - loved and despised by his critics and imitators. Legacy Parks Foundation announced today that Cheryl Strayed, the New York Times bestselling author of WILD, about her 1,100 mile solo walk on the Pacific Crest Trail, is the scheduled speaker for the annual Legacy Luncheon for the Parks on Friday, the 11th of September, 2015 on the spectacular Holston River Farm at the head of the Tennessee River. Strayed’s memoir documenting her sometimes harrowing, other times hilarious trek at 26 years old, and the personal journey that led her there, has been translated into more than 30 languages around the world, and was the first selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. WILD was adapted into a 2014 film featuring Reese Witherspoon as Cheryl and Laura Dern as her mother, Bobbi, both of whom garnered Oscar nominations.

“We are thrilled to have Cheryl come to Knoxville and speak about her time on the trail,” said Carol Evans, Executive Director of Legacy Parks Foundation. “We know how important trails are to our community, but Cheryl explains how important the time on a trail can be to individuals as well,” Evans continued. Strayed will discuss what she learned about how we move from grief and anger to acceptance, and how we keep walking even when it seems impossible to stand. “I turned to the wilderness to find myself,” Strayed says on her website. “The story is about a girl carrying a pack that was literally too heavy for her to carry, bearing the unbearable. Every single one of us has had to do that at one time or another in our lives.”

East Tennesseans responded to the shock of 9/11 with an outpouring of love and support. In addition to volunteering in rescue and cleanup efforts, East Tennesseans launched a campaign to help the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) replenish its fleet. The original goal was to raise some $400,000 for a new pumper truck. In an overwhelming response, East Tennesseans gave from the heart to more than double the goal, resulting in $950,000--enough to purchase a top-of-the-line, 95-foot tower ladder vehicle. The “Freedom Engine” went into service in March 2002 and was dedicated on September 11th of that year. Project organizer Diana Morgan summed up regional sentiment by stating, "Let New York City remember that when the Freedom Engine rolls, it rolls with the heart and spirit of East Tennesseans all the way."

Mickey Mallonee, Diana Morgan, and Shelba Murphy will share their experiences organizing the fundraising campaign and working with New York officials. At the time of the project the three speakers held a variety of positions that contributed to its success: Mickey Mallonee was the director of special events for the City of Knoxville, and Diana Morgan and Shelba Murphy both worked for the Knoxville News Sentinel, Diana as the community and educational services manager, and Shelby as marketing director. They will be joined for the program by several colleagues with whom they worked as a team to support the Freedom Engine mission.

FDNY typically removes their trucks from service after 10 years. The Freedom Engine was retired in 2013, and certain artifacts were carefully removed to be returned to the East Tennesseans who had so graciously supported the Freedom Engine project. The East Tennessee Historical Society and Museum are honored to be chosen as the permanent home for these artifacts. These items will be on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through September 30 and include a well-worn bucket door, a captain’s helmet, the memorial plaque from the people of East Tennessee, and a presentation plaque containing a piece of World Trade Center metal.
