  • September 18, 2015 — October 4, 2015

Category: Kids, family and Theatre

Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr., a musical stage version of the classic 1989 Walt Disney Studios film, specifically adapted for children and families. The play will be performed September 18 through October 4, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM.

In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home - and her fins - behind and live in the world above. But first she'll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking. Many of the favorite songs of the Walt Disney film are brilliantly recreated on stage, such as the Oscar-winning “Under The Sea,” “Part Of Your World,” and “She’s In Love.” The script is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and the Disney film , written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. The script is written by Doug Wright, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman & Glenn Slater. The play is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

KCT will also host a series of "Under The Sea" tea parties to coincide with Saturday 1 PM and Sunday 3 PM performances of Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. Performances with the tea-party option include September 19, 20, 26, 27; October 3 and 4, as interest and availability dictates. The $25 ticket price includes admission to the performance, as well as food, drinks, crafts and games, all with a special "Under The Sea" theme. Pre-registration is required by calling (865) 208-3677. All tea-party tickets must be pre-paid. Seating is limited.

McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture: Lecture: Krista Billingsley: Structural Violence and Disaster Management in Nepal

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with its epicenter 34 kilometers east southeast of Lamjung and 70 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu. Several earthquakes followed the first with varying degrees of magnitude, and more than 5.6 million people have been affected (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs 2015). People from marginalized groups suffer disproportionately in disasters due to preexisting inequalities and the inability to access resources. This is certainly the case in Nepal where inequalities are deeply entrenched and people belonging to marginalized groups lacked access to food, medical care, and adequate housing before the earthquake. While the earthquake did not discriminate, relief efforts following the earthquake entrenched existing inequalities through the failure to address ongoing structural violence. Geologists have long predicted that Nepal would experience an earthquake of great magnitude and now contend more earthquakes will certainly follow. Thus, attention to structural violence is crucial to scholarship and to the practice of disaster management in Nepal.

Krista Billingsley is a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee. Her research examines transitional justice in Nepal and focuses on structural violence and the perceptions of Nepalis affected by conflict as children. At the University of Tennessee, she has served as the sole instructor for several courses, including ‘Introduction to Cultural Anthropology,’ ‘Women and Islam,’ the Anthropology of South Asia,’ and ‘Youth and Conflict.’ In 2013, she was awarded a W.K. McClure Scholarship for the Study of World Affairs to conduct preliminary research in Nepal and will return to complete her fieldwork in January 2016. In addition to the McClure Scholarship, she has been financially supported at the University of Tennessee by the Department of Anthropology, the Center for the Study of Youth and Political Conflict, and the Office of Information Technology, and has received outside funding from the American Ethnological Association/Association for Political and Legal Anthropology, and most recently received a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship and a Cornell Summer Intensive Nepali Language Award to study Nepali at Cornell University. http://mcclungmuseum.utk.edu/events/lecture-krista-billingsley/
