Chicago-born Sandy Brown has degrees in art and education from Northeastern Illinois University, with post-graduate work in studio art and art history at Northern Illinois University. She was Executive Director of both the Monroe Arts Center in Monroe, Wisconsin, and the Monroe Area Council for the Arts in Madisonville, Tennessee. As a watercolorist and mixed media artist, Brown enjoys not only analyzing structure, but exploring atmospheric texture as well. Her painting style is spontaneous and changes as she works. She paints without reference to photos, preferring to be open to possibilities in the present moment. Among her strongest influences are the American Luminists, as well as Constable and Turner. Additionally she is drawn to van Gogh’s work for the passion of his brushwork and purity of color. Her focus is on painting change. Sandy’s emphasis on painting relationships, as opposed to “things,” drives both what she paints and how she paints it.

The exhibit opening reception is Friday, September 18, 2015 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Brown will be on hand to informally discuss her work. The reception includes light refreshments and is free and open to the public. After the reception, Athens Community Theatre presents Steel Magnolias at 7:30 pm in the Sue E. Trotter Theatre. Rala is excited to welcome back local artist extraordinaire, Bran Rogers. A true renaissance man, he does everything from puppeteering to painting! His new body of work is about tortured poet, Edgar Allen Poe. As a unique twist, each illustration uses red wine and dirt from one of the houses Poe lived in.

Our second featured artist is Asheville based painter, Julie Armbruster. We're always enchanted by the fantastic worlds and characters she creates! "My most recent work delves further into the imaginative world of the individual characters and their personal struggle to understand their unique potential. Often realized as human-animal hybrids, they attempt to make sense of the reality they are presented with. The characters evolve and shift seeking some sort of resolution, but they are often faced with difficulty."

Judy Clark Turner is an artist who has always loved the tactile, 3-D feel of clay. Visitors to the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade are attracted to her beautiful pottery creations including functional and decorative serving, salad, and soup bowls, coffee mugs, plates, sugar and creamers, honey pot containers, soap dispensers, and more. Judy also creates larger, uniquely decorative pieces that reflect her artistic talent and technical skill.

Judy’s artwork will be on exhibit throughout the month of September at the Plateau Creative Art Center (PCAC), 451 Lakeview Drive, in Fairfield Glade. The PCAC is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Judy will be the Featured Artist at a Fun and Wine Friday reception on September 4, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at PCAC. The public is invited to attend this free event, where they can join Art Guild members, view the gallery display including Judy’s artwork, and enjoy a glass of wine or other non-alcoholic beverage.

Terra Madre is a juried group of women clay artists that was founded in the year 2000 by female ceramic artists from East Tennessee. Their mission is to support each other in the pursuit of their dreams as artists and as women. Terra Madre members are affiliated with many juried and professional arts organizations. Collectively, the group exhibits in 2B3 shows annually and individually their work has been exhibited all over the country and can be found in galleries, shops, juried fine craft shows and fairs, as well as in many private art collections. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by Emily Taylor of Knoxville. The exhibition includes recent and former portraits and portrait-like paintings and drawings. Emily Taylor grew up in New York City in the 70s and 80s before circulating through Amherst, Massachusetts; Ithaca, New York; and Knoxville, Tennessee for school and life reasons. She received her MFA in Painting and MA in Art Education from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. An opening reception for the featured artists will be held during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk beginning at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 4. There will be complimentary refreshments along with jazz performed by Kelvin Walters.

Most of Gary Dagnan’s oil paintings are of the mountains, hills, lakes and structures of the East Tennessee area. He is inspired by the changing light and colors that come from distinctly different seasons of the South, explaining that he is more interested in the aesthetics of a scene than with documenting a specific place: “I want my paintings to express the emotional and spiritual connection that I have with nature,” he says. With his work in more than 400 private and public collections, the Jasper, TN, native has had 18 solo shows, and his works have been in many national, state and regional art shows throughout the United States. Larry Gabbard enjoys fast-firing techniques that create a rich variety of textures and colors on bisque clay. "I find the unexpected marks made when clay, heat, and smoke interact to be among the most intriguing and challenging of finishes to perfect and reproduce," he says. While most of his elegant pottery is wheel thrown, he seeks out alternative methods, among them raku, horse hair, saggar, obvara, and pit firing. The Cincinnati, OH, transplant began his pottery career after moving to Kingston in 1999. He attends workshops of well known potters as well as classes at renowned educational institutions to learn more and refine his skills.
