Category: Music

Knoxville Jazz Orchestra presents “In Search of Garaj Mahal with Fareed Haque”

Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque was born in 1963 to a Pakistani father and Chilean mother. His extensive travels, with long stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan and Chile as well as deep study of classical and jazz traditions, inform his unique vision of modern music. After many years of work as a sideman to top jazz stars as well as recording as a leader for Blue Note records, Haque co-founded the jam/world/progressive/jazz super-group Garaj Mahal. This exceptional concert will explore music from that group’s catalog, re-imagined for big band.

Tickets for the event are $34.50 adult, $15.00 student.

Knoxville Jazz Orchestra: Jazz Lunch @ The Square Room with Robinella

Category: Culinary arts, food and Music

1st Wednesday of each month - $15 admission includes lunch. Hosted by Wes Lunsford.

Robinella Bailey is one of East Tennessee's most celebrated vocalists. She has toured the country, opening for the likes of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Nickel Creek, Earl Scruggs and many others and released half a dozen recordings under her own steam. I-Tunes music review proclaimed "Robinella's voice is so versatile - so utterly loose, carefree and expressive no matter what the material is - that she glides into every tune..."

In this, her second appearance at Jazz Lunch, she pays tribute to the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin. Don't miss this very special performance.

UT School of Music: Percussion Ensemble Concert

  • November 2, 2016
  • 8 PM

Category: Free event and Music

The University of Tennessee Percussion Studies area will showcase one of its two major ensembles in Fall concerts, directed by Andrew Bliss. This concert will feature repertoire both timeless and new. Edgard Varèse’s Ionisation (1931), acclaimed as the first significant composition ever written for percussion ensemble, received its premiere in Carnegie Hall. Using a plethora of instruments such as snare drums, chimes, air raid sirens, and anvils, this masterwork changed the role of the percussionist as an artist and was critical to the development of repertoire that the UT Percussion Ensemble is privileged to share with the community each season. This concert will also present more recent works such as Robert Honstein’s Patter and Impulse by Anna Meadors.

At Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, 1741 Volunteer Blvd., Knoxville, Tennessee 37916. For more information, please visit percussion.utk.edu or contact Dr. Andrew Bliss, UT’s Director of Percussion Studies at abliss@utk.edu. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Regular news surrounding UT Percussion can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/UTPercussion, Instagram @utperc, and on Twitter @UTPercussion.
