“Finding Higher Ground”: Knoxville Art History Discussion with Stephen Wicks and Jack Neely
Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m.

Join Knoxville Museum of Art curator Stephen Wicks and our own Jack Neely for a discussion of the diverse and often-surprising story of visual art in Knoxville, as interpreted in the KMA’s impressive and recently expanded “Higher Ground” exhibition. Stephen and Jack have collaborated on a nearly 300-page narrative catalog of the KMA’s ever-growing collection, outlining Knoxville’s artists as well as the venues where they exhibited, beginning before the Civil War and extending to the present day, spanning early plein-air landscapes, photography, impressionism, abstract expressionism, surrealism, and some other approaches that are harder to name. Included will be discussions of Lloyd Branson, Catherine Wiley, Beauford Delaney, and the sometimes-startling Knoxville 7. The free presentation will take place in the KMA’s Ann & Steve Bailey Hall.

Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 World's Fair Park, Knoxville, TN 37916. Hours: Tu-Sa 10-5, Su 1-5. Information: 865-525-6101, www.knoxart.org. Admission and parking are free.
