The East Tennessee Historical Society announces the 3rd annual History Hootenanny, a celebration of East Tennessee history. History Hootenanny showcases the best of the East Tennessee History Center and its partners at this open house. This year’s theme is “Music in East Tennessee” as we celebrate the closing of the feature exhibition, They Sang What They Lived: The Story of Carl and Pearl Butler. Guests can enjoy live music, music-themed children’s activities, a used local history book sale, Knoxville walking tours, shuttles to the Historic House Museums of Knoxville, and more! History Hootenanny is a free public history event organized in partnership by the East Tennessee Historical Society, McClung Historical Collection, and Tennessee Archives for Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS).

Fun with Farragut’s Fleet

Fun with Farragut’s Fleet, a Farragut family favorite, returns to Mayor Bob Leonard Park, 301 Watt Road, from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. This free event is a way for kids to get up close and personal with big equipment used by the Town of Farragut Public Works and private companies such as Rural Metro, Vulcan Materials and more.

Marble City Opera: Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites

Marble City Opera kicks off its twelfth season on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. with a concert titled Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites. The performance will be inside Historic Cherokee Caverns, where the temperature is always 58° and the acoustics are excellent. Tickets for the concert are $25 and are on sale now at www.MarbleCityOpera.com/tickets.

Cody Boling, John Overholt, and Chris Plaas will sing a program of opera and musical theater favorites. The tenors will be accompanied by music director Brandon Coffer. Boling recently performed as “Murray” and Overholt as “Broom” in Marble City Opera’s world premiere of The Doctor and the Devils. Plaas sang the role of “Tinca” in Marble City Opera’s site-specific performances of Il Tabarro.

Historic Cherokee Caverns is located at 8524 Oak Ridge Highway in Knoxville. The caverns are preserved and maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. The cave is only open for special events including Marble City Opera’s concerts, classic family movies, Trick or Treat in the Cave, and Christmas in the Cave.

This will be the third time that Marble City Opera has presented a concert inside Cherokee Caverns.

Marble Springs: Tea in 18th-Century America

Marble Springs State Historic Site is pleased to invite visitors to the next event in its educational series, "Beyond Petticoats: Courage and Conviction in 18th-Century Women." Join us in our historic tavern for a unique experience where you can savor the taste of 18th-century tea and culture, presented in collaboration with local teahouse, The Kraken’s Cup.

This enchanting tea party, "Tea in 18th-Century America," is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to step back in time and immerse themselves in the elegant tea culture of the 1700s. The event will explore the types of tea, tea ware, customs, and etiquette associated with tea in colonial homes.
Guests will savor a selection of teas that were likely thrown into the harbor during the Boston Tea Party, accompanied by scrumptious homemade butter cookies. Vallie Prince, the owner of The Kraken's Cup Tearoom in Knoxville, will share her extensive knowledge and passion for tea, providing captivating insights into the history of tea and its profound impact on 18th-century America.

Admission to "Tea in 18th-Century America" requires a $5 donation. With only 18 spots available per class time, interested individuals are encouraged to reserve their place promptly. This workshop is the fifth installment in our "Beyond Petticoats" series, which has been celebrating the diverse roles and contributions of women in the 18th century. Knoxville Choral Society: Fall Auditions

The Knoxville Choral Society is excited to announce fall auditions for the 2024-2025 season on August 11, 12, 18, and 19. Auditions will take place at Ball Camp Baptist Church, located at 2412 Ball Camp Byington Road in Knoxville. Openings are available in all voice parts for the 100-voice volunteer choir. Rehearsals are held most Monday evenings from August to May, between 7:30 and 9:30 PM. The audition process includes an assessment of vocal quality, sight-reading, and tonal memory drills. Knoxville Children's Theatre: Tom Sawyer

Tom Sawyer may be the most famous resident of St. Petersburg, Missouri, but he’s a down to earth character who not only knows how to cure warts with stump water and live the swashbuckling life on the high seas, he can also whitewash a fence in no time flat. Mark Twain’s homage to the imagination and high adventure of youth on the mighty Mississippi features Tom and a cast of characters who live at the very heart of Americana: Huck Finn, Aunt Polly, Becky Thatcher, the Widow Douglas, Muff Potter, and more.

The play is performed by 17 talented young actors and designed by 9 talented young designers from ages 9 to 16.

Art Market Gallery: Kathy Holland and Debbie Corley

First Friday Reception: August 2nd, 5:30 - 9 pm

A native of Virginia, Kathy Holland attended the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCUarts) in Richmond, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking in 1978. The following summer she studied with master wood-engraver Blair Hughes-Stanton at the Central School of Art and Design in London, England. Ever since graduation from VCUarts, Kathy has worked continually as an artist, exhibiting drawings, etchings, relief prints, and paintings in juried national and international exhibitions and solo shows. In addition to her studio practice, she has worked over the years as a freelance graphic artist, medical illustrator, mura lpainter, portrait artist, art show juror, and drawing instructor. In 1986 she emigrated to Canada, lived in the small rural town of Deep River, Ontario for over11 years, and exhibited her work extensively in solo exhibitions at public galleries throughout Ontario and in juried shows across the US.

Debbie Corley of DC Pottery creates pieces that are mostly wheel thrown, but she constructs some hand-built pieces as well, focusing on functional ware that is intended to be used and enjoyed in daily life. Inspired by the dynamics of the outside world, the changing seasons, and the organic patterns and textures found in nature, her work includes surface designs are created by employing carving techniques to expose the clay material underneath underglazes, hand painting to emphasize and highlight to create contrast and interest, and layering of patterned transfers, textures, and decals.
