  • August 21, 2024 — August 22, 2024

Category: Literature, spoken word, writing and Science, nature

At Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Avenue

The Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association is comprised of folks who love telling, listening to, and rejoicing in our rich heritage of stories. You’ll find a multitude of telling styles and genres among our members: whether it’s traditional Appalachian tales, classical stories from foreign lands, contemporary fiction, or personal narratives, you’re never quite sure what you may find as the next story unfolds. True to that form, on Wednesday, August 21 we offer a "Summer Smorgasbord", where tellers share some of their personal favorite stories, old and new!

Featured storytellers for the evening include: Sheri Liles, Roland Mote and Brenda J Southerland.

Doors open at 6 pm, stories begin at 7. Tickets for this event are $12 for adults, $6 for kids (ages 5-12).
The Ijams Beer Garden and concession area will be open all evening. This event will be held on the back patio at the Visitor Center with seating provided. No outside alcohol allowed. In case of inclement weather, this event will move inside to the large room in the Visitor Center.

Film Fest Knox: I Know Where I’m Going!

  • August 21, 2024

Category: Film and Free event

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger · 1945 · 91 minutes
August 21 · Regal Riviera · 7:00 p.m.

“I reached the point of thinking there were no more masterpieces to discover, until I saw I Know Where I’m Going!” — Martin Scorsese

“The love story develops, deftly and gently, not between the customary movie paper dolls, but between two sympathetic, strongly individualized human beings, beautifully embodied by Miss Hiller and Mr. Livesey…. The film is an achievement in civilized comedy; even in its grave and noble moments it preserves a graceful, tender gaiety.” — James Agee

In Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s stunningly photographed comedy, romance flourishes in an unlikely place—the bleak and moody Scottish Hebrides. Wendy Hiller stars as a headstrong young woman who travels to these remote isles to marry a rich lord. Stranded by stormy weather, she meets a handsome naval officer (Roger Livesey) who threatens to thwart her carefully laid-out life plans.

At Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Gallery, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918

Mary Bow
Images of many different animals, both domesticated and wild, are rendered in thickly applied acrylic paint on textured canvases using a dry brush technique that allows successive layers of color to show through. Bow hopes to provoke empathy for non-human animals as they live, raise their young and experience joy, sorrow and pain. Mary Bow has degrees in Anthropology, Psychology, and Visual Art, as well as higher degrees in Education. She feels that she has a unique perspective on how human relationships with others in the animal kingdom have changed over time. www.marypbow.com

Curt Imerman’s finely detailed drawings of barns are created by using fine-tipped pens as a brush rather than an instrument to draw lines. As the tip of the pen wears away from use, it produces lighter and finer lines, allowing different effects. Imerman says, “Barns are disappearing from our country’s landscape at an ever-increasing rate. Barns are a part of our Americana. This is my way of memorializing and sharing my fascination with old, weathered barns.” Imerman’s attention to detail comes from his career as a mechanical designer for a major U.S. crane manufacturer. While designing cranes, Curt’s drawing talent was called upon to prepare conceptual drawings of various lift crane designs. He is a member of the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville and serves on their Board of Directors.

Debbie Corley of DC Pottery creates pieces that are mostly wheel thrown, but she constructs some hand-built pieces as well, focusing on functional ware that is intended to be used and enjoyed in daily life. Inspired by the dynamics of the outside world, the changing seasons, and the organic patterns and textures found in nature, her work includes surface designs are created by employing carving techniques to expose the clay material underneath underglazes, hand painting to emphasize and highlight to create contrast and interest, and layering of patterned transfers, textures, and decals.
