Join us for a wine and cheese reception and exhibition of high resolution photographs featuring Discover Life in America's All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory on Monday, October 19, from 5:30-7:30 PM. DLIA is involved in a quest to identify and understand all the species of life within an 800-square-mile ecosystem in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Researchers seek knowledge about the components, abundance, and diversity of life, from spiders in the soil to slime molds in the forest canopy. The primary tool of DLIA is the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, which brings scientists from around the world to inventory the estimated 100,000 species of living organisms in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These captivating illustrations capture the beauty and diversity of the species discovered in our region and celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Admission to the reception and display is free, but reservations are requested. In addition to the reception, the photos will be on display throughout the month of October in the Garden Office. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg will present "Women in Wood," an exhibition to bring light to the exceptional quality of work being created by women artists working in the medium of wood - both woodturning and constructed wood. The public is invited to the opening reception in the main gallery and lecture presented by nationally renowned studio wood sculptor Betty Scarpino on Friday, Oct. 16, at 6:00 pm. The exhibition runs October 16-January 2, 2010. The guest lecturer Betty Scarpino will also be teaching a weekend master class that weekend at the school. She has a background in industrial arts, sculpture, and design, all of which she teaches and writes about. Her work is represented in many public and private collections including The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Mobile Museum of Art. Her work was included in the recent book, New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art. Developed during professor Beauvais Lyons' 2009 spring semester course in Graduate Printmaking at The University of Tennessee, the premise was for graduate students to curate an exhibition surveying uses of print media by contemporary artists. During the first phase of planning, each student compiled a list of ten modes of using print media with representative artists. The final list was broad, encompassing uses of traditional print media intended for galleries and museums to vernacular and democratic uses of the multiple that function outside of art institutions. The show also includes uses of print media to create three-dimensional and installation works, as well as prints as the basis for animations. The bulk of the work selected for the exhibition reflects the students' own interest in various forms of self-publishing, though there are also examples of prints produced in collaboration with a master printer. Taken as a whole, the exhibition offers a survey of contemporary printmaking that is grounded in traditional approaches, while also including a variety of new media and democratic forms of practice that push art out of the galleries and museums and into the world at large. There will be a gallery talk by exhibiting artist Althea Murphy-Price on Thursday, October 8, at 7PM, in the McCarty Auditorium of the Art + Architecture Building. Her visit is sponsored by the UT Print Club. The exhibition preview reception will follow in the Ewing Gallery at 8 PM.

Pauline Wallen, a young 87-year-old Knoxville native, is a champion at watercolor, pastel, oil and drawing. She has garnered numerous awards both in the United States and in France for her creative spirit and insight that often portray East Tennessee life. Hanson Gallery will honor Pauline Wallen with a Retrospective Show that will include works in various media showing the artist's far reach and skill. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by seven visual artists celebrating The Carpetbag Theatre's 40th Anniversary: Jeffrey Cody, Terry Collins, Eddie Davis, Walt Fieldsa, Alan Jones, Aisha K, Melody Reeves, and Sister Rakiah. The artists collaborated to create an installation in response to ways they have been moved and inspired by Carpetbag's work over the past 40 years. The exhibition will be shown in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from October 2-30, 2009 with an opening reception as part of First Friday activities on October 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM. The reception will feature public performances by members of the Carpetbag ensemble of actors, musicians and spoken word artists using excerpts from their repertoire of dramatic, spoken word and musical works. The Carpetbag Theatre (CBT) is one of the few tenured African-American professional theatre companies in the South. "It is important for us, as visual artists, to honor Carpetbag's vision and contribution to our regional and national cultural life,” says artist Melody Reeves. “They have created an impressive series of original dramas embodying essential stories from communities across the world. And they work constantly to train new artists and give back to their communities.” The 40th Anniversary Exhibition will be on display at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street.
