Museum of Appalachian: Sgt. Alvin C. York War Relic Exhibition

1174.jpg
  • February 7, 2010 — March 31, 2010

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and History, heritage

It’s a rusty old machine gun, with tattered strap and battle-scarred wooden stock—not even very large by today’s standards. By itself, it’s not that impressive. But mention the name Sgt. Alvin C. York, and this war relic takes on special meaning. It represents “the flag on the hill,” a brave deed by a backwoods soldier who remained cool under fire, silencing machine gun nests that were raining a firestorm of bullets on Allied troops. York was the leader of seven men who captured 132 German machine gunners on October 8, 1918, in the Battle of the Argonne Forest in northern France. For this heroic deed, York received the National Medal of Honor and became the most decorated soldier of World War I. This M1908/15 Maxim light machine gun is documented as one of the German weapons confiscated on that day. This historic artifact will become the centerpiece of an already extensive exhibit at the Museum, revealing the man behind the medals—a simple and honest East Tennessee backwoodsman who used his fame to help others. A special exhibit at the Museum will include items on loan from the York family.

Museum of Appalachia, 2819 Andersonville Hwy., Clinton, TN 37716. Hours: February: 10 AM to 4 PM weekdays, 10 AM to 5 PM weekends; March: 10 AM to 5 PM weekdays, 10 AM to 6 PM weekends.Information: 865-494-7680, www.museumofappalachia.org

Hanson Gallery: A Jewelry Trunk Show from California Designer Philippa Roberts

  • February 5, 2010 — February 15, 2010

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

First Friday Opening, February 5, 5-8 p.m. The Trunk Show will highlight several collections by Philippa Roberts and includes over 75 individual pieces of jewelry. California designer Philippa Roberts' stunning collection of jewelry illustrates
her love for clean lines and soft colors. Born in South Africa to a jewelry making family, Philippa was naturally drawn to working with metals and stones. She graduated from Miami University in Ohio with a BFA in metal design and photography before moving to San Francisco in 1995. Her daily walks along the coast of the Pacific cean inspire much of her creativity. From the clean, blue stones in many of her pieces to the simple replication of a dragonfly on a necklace, her work stems from the nature around her. She also incorporates a feeling of the urban, with lines and patterns that imitate architecture and design seen around the city. Philippa integrates silver and gold with different colored stones, adding texture, shape and hue to her designs. She forms all the original pieces by carving in wax or fabricating in metal. Using silver as her main medium, Philippa creates necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings that can be worn formally or informally, with an appeal to all ages.
