Farragut Celebrates the Installation of Admiral Farragut Bronze with Memorial Plaza Dedication Weekend

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events and History, heritage

The Town of Farragut is celebrating the long-awaited installation of the Admiral David Glasgow Farragut bronze statue with a weekend of events ending with a dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 2 at 4 p.m. at the Farragut Town Hall. The bronze, commissioned in the fall of 2007 by the Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the Farragut Folklife Museum Committee, is believed to be the first bronze of the Town’s namesake, Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, in over 100 years. Farragut, who was born on the riverbank at Stoney Point at Low’s Ferry (off Northshore Dr.) a few miles from Farragut, was the first commissioned rear admiral, vice admiral and admiral of the U.S. Navy and was a Civil War hero. He was the son of George (Jorge) Farragut who emigrated to this country in 1776 from the Island of Minorca, off the east coast of Spain. George Farragut would later serve the colonies gallantly in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

The sculptor is Linda Rankin, a Knox County native renowned for her art in watercolors, bronze and other mediums. Her commissions include many private and corporate collections throughout the country and she is especially well known for her bronze sculptures of world champion horses and their owners. Locally, she was the sculptor of the Guy Smith bust located at the Knoxville Zoo.

The featured speaker at the Sunday event will be Rear Admiral Jay A DeLoach, USN (Ret) who is currently the Director of the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington, D.C. Besides an illustrious career in the U.S. Navy, Rear Admiral DeLoach served as an adjunct professor for the Naval War College teaching Maritime Operations and was a senior staff member of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board from 1990-2008.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, a sponsor of the 60th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, is showcasing the watercolors, acrylics and drawings of Bob George, winner of the 2009 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage Art Contest. Bob George relocated to Sevierville, Tennessee in 2002 after a career in Washington, D.C. as an illustrator, commercial artist and art director. Bob, a native of Key West, Florida, studied at the Ringling School of Art. His artwork has been featured at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, the White House, Pentagon and U.S. Park Service Visitor Centers. Bob’s winning entry, “Bloodroot” was selected as part of a national juried competition and has been used as the Pilgrimage’s promotional image for 2010. Criteria for submission is that the artist’s primary subject included botanically accurate depictions of a spring flowering plant (or plants) native to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “Bob’s skills as an illustrator and a painter are exquisite. It is evident that he has a strong relationship with and has mastered his media. His work brings the beauty and composition of nature to life on paper – the rendering of a simple stone becomes a captivating visual.
