Jubilee Community Arts: Georgia Crackers

Category: Music

Old-Time String Band

With influences from the great Georgia musicians of the 1920s and 1930s, the Georgia Crackers keep alive the spirit of spontaneity and improvisation in the old-time string band tradition. Their stage banter is always a crowd pleaser as is the dancing of Ms. Edmonstone. Andy Edmonstone also plays the standup bass. Along with old-time singer Kenneth Johnson (of the Pea Ridge Ramblers) on guitar and Chip Corbitt on clawhammer banjo, this rhythm section holds it down for Fiddlin’ Mick Kinney. Kinney has a unique but authentic fiddle style. When asked for his secret, Mick says, “steal licks from the best” and “keep it hot and greasy, but take it easy.” The Georgia Crackers reach back for that old time feel and surge forward in a rush so entertaining it’s mesmerizing. Congratulations to the band for placing first in the old-time band category at this fall’s Tennessee Valley Old Time Music Convention.

Advance tickets are: $10 JCA Members, Students, Seniors • $11 General Advance • $6 Children 12 and under. Fees apply. Tickets (if available) will also be sold at the door the night of the event for $12. Jubilee Community Arts, 1538 Laurel Ave, Knoxville, TN 37916. For information: 865-522-5851, www.jubileearts.org. 2445.jpg

Category: Fundraisers and Music

Children caroling, the warmth of a holiday gathering set against the backdrop of a spectacular river view of a festive and glittering downtown—all the key ingredients for the fifth annual Holiday Sparkles & Spirits! -- a wine and jewelry auction to benefit The Joy of Music School.

Everyone is invited downtown for a magical evening at the Baptist/Mercy Atrium. Start your holiday shopping early. Enjoy the carolers at the door. Stroll into the rotunda and behold the sparkling view as you partake of the delicious fare and embark on your mission to find that special person a unique gift from a fabulous selection of fine wines and an eclectic assortment of jewelry. While you are treating yourself and your special someone, you are also providing year-round music lessons and instruments for local children who cannot otherwise afford them. The evening features a special performance by the students of the Joy of Music School Youth Choir. They will be joined by a handful of young soloists from the School as well. Beautiful jewelry and wines from around the world will be auctioned to help underwrite the children’s studies at The Joy of Music School, a nonprofit organization that opens its doors to kids whose opportunities are limited by circumstance, and allows them freely to enjoy the gift of music, and the many benefits of a music education.

Tickets for the event are $75 per person and can be obtained by contacting the School. At Baptist Hospital Atrium/Rotunda – Blount Ave, Downtown Knoxville (free parking). Information: 865-525-6806, graffeo@joyofmusicschool.org; www.joyofmusicschool.org
