Tennessee Mountain Writers January Jumpstart workshops - January 13-15, 2013
Tennessee Mountain Writers will present "January Jumpstart XIII" featuring a fiction workshop led by Darnell Arnoult, Writer-in-Residence at Lincoln Memorial University, and a poetry workshop led by Nashville poet Bill Brown. The event, to be held at the Magnuson Hotel in Sweetwater, will open with an informal social hour on Friday evening; workshop sessions will run from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Participation is limited to 20 per workshop. The registration fee of $110 includes lunch on Saturday; there will be an optional catered dinner at the hotel Saturday night for an additional $16. You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception for Central High’s 2nd Annual National Art Honor Society Exhibit to be held at the Fountain City Art Center at 213 Hotel Avenue . The reception will be held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The Art Honor Society members and their instructors, Peggy Leland and Phyllis Ball, will be designing and distributing their own invitations, hanging their own show, bringing their reception food, and providing judges for the artwork. If you came to their show last year, you know that it was very impressive. After that show, the Art Center decided to offer them an opportunity to exhibit every year as a featured show. Heroes is set in August 1959 in a home somewhere in France for retired military men. The play takes place outside on a terrace in the garden of a convent hospital where Philippe and Henri are hatching a plan to escape. The three characters are all veterans of the French army in the First World War.

Children’s Theatre of Knoxville will present a live stage version of the thrilling adventure “The Neverending Story,” for 13 performances, Thursdays through Sundays from January 13 through 28.

“The Neverending Story” is one of the most acclaimed modern adventure stories for children. Bastian loves his books, but he is always disappointed when his
books always have to end. From a mysterious book-seller comes a blessing and a curse: a neverending story! The story which stirs Bastian’s soul is of Atreyu,
a native boy on a great crusading adventure to rescue the world of Fantastica from the clutches of The Nothing. As the story grows, Bastian discovers this book begins to blend with reality in unforgettable ways.
First published in 1983, and made into a beloved film in 1984, “The Neverending Story” is a tale that all ages can enjoy.

The Black Lillies filtered through several lineup changes before frontman Cruz Contreras finally assembled a crackerjack team of pickers, players and singers who have what it takes to put meat on those songs. With Whiskey Angel, The Black Lillies established themselves, and it didn’t take long for them to make their mark on the national scene. Sophomore record, 100 Miles of Wreckage, takes what Cruz built in Whiskey Angel and fortifies it, a rustic sound without name and place, unbeholden to geographic region or easy classification. They'll be on the U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou on January 13. Tickets on sale Friday November 18, at 10 a.m.

Those "patient fans" who had the pleasure to see the fabled Freight Hoppers perform from 1992 to the band's lay-up will certainly know what a sight and sound it is to witness the infectious groove of fiddle and banjo combination driven by David Bass and Frank Lee. During the 1990s, The Freight Hoppers became the most popular modern day old time music string band in the world. The Freight Hoppers recorded two critically acclaimed albums that climbed into the Top 20 of Billboard's Americana music charts: Where'd You Come From, Where'd You Go? (1996) and Waiting on the Gravy Train (1998). They toured extensively in the U.S., Canada and Europe, appeared on Garrison Keillor's " A Prairie Home Companion," and elevated the popularity of old time music all over the world.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Mary Agnes Schaefer as the featured artist for January and February. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, her exhibit features a variety of decorated gourds, dolls and quilt blocks. A charter member of the Farragut Arts Council, Schaefer and her gardener husband, Bob, became interested in gourds after a trip to Gatlinburg. After the gourds are grown, harvested, cleaned and stored, she makes them into works of art. Depending on the shape, Schaefer turns the gourds into baskets, bird houses, dolls and boxes. Others are decorated in simple designs or painted. Also on display are Schaefer's "Fabric Friends" handmade dolls, as well as quilt blocks painted on wood panels.

“Minutiae” can be defined as “precise details” or “small, trifling matters.” In an upcoming art exhibit at Pellissippi State Community College, however, “minutiae” translates as “delightful.”

The college’s “Delightful Minutiae” display debuts on Jan. 10 and will remain on exhibit through Feb. 8. Free and open to the public, it showcases the work of artist Lauren Kussro. A printmaker and paper sculptor, Kussro taught drawing at Pellissippi State as an adjunct faculty member fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters.

“Delightful Minutiae” will be on display at the Bagwell Center for Media and Art gallery on the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. A free closing reception to which the community is invited takes place 3-5 p.m. on Feb. 8. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays or by appointment.
