The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new mixed media exhibition entitled “Gallery 73: The Fish Lady and Friends” featuring the work of regional artists as coordinated by Gallery 73 curator Mary K., “The Fish Lady”. The exhibition will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from June 1-29, 2012 with an opening reception as part of First Friday activities on June 1 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Three of the featured artists are Michael Bedoian, Ann Melton and Mary K. “The Fish Lady”.

“Gallery 73: The Fish Lady and Friends” will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, June 2, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. May 29-June 29, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Linda Sullivan of Oak Ridge and Rod Fleming of Powell.

Linda Sullivan, who holds an MFA in ceramics, creates functional and sculptural vessels out of stoneware and porcelain clays. Inspired by various landscapes and drawing on her strong background in painting, she employs a unique glazing process by pouring and overlapping her glazes in a purposeful, painterly way to depict landscape imagery. She says, “viewers of my work often verbalize about being reminded of landscapes from their own personal experiences and [share with me] the memories that the imagery evokes.”

Landscape painter Rod Fleming owes his interest in watercolor to the influence of the late Hubert Shuptrine. A native of Arkansas, Rod originally used the Ozarks as inspiration for his paintings and now his landscape subjects are from the Great Smoky Mountains. He says that “the sights and sounds of flowing water always hold my interest for the next painting.”

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for June 1 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Streetwise: Masters of 1960s Photography May 4-August 5, 2012.

This exhibition highlights the work of a group of eight American photographers who focused their lenses on the rapid social and political changes that transformed the nation during the turbulent 1960s. The featured images present a realistic, sometimes dire, view of America surveying the “outlaw culture” of bikers and chain gangs, Boston’s red light district known as the Combat Zone, Black Panthers, the gritty streets and neighborhoods of New York, the politically charged South, and fringe communities and subcultures around the country.

The public is invited to a preview party Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is free and includes a gallery talk and cash bar.

The Market Square Farmers' Market is an open-air farmers' market located on Market Square in the heart of downtown Knoxville. Everything at the MSFM is grown or made by the vendor in the East Tennessee region. Products vary by the seasons and include produce, eggs, honey, herbs, free-range meat, bread, baked goods, salsas, coffee and artisan crafts. With interactive fountains, delicious local food and entertainment, the MSFM is a perfect family destination.

Free parking is available in the Market Square, Locust St. and State St. Garages, and at meters, on Saturdays. Parking is $1 per hour on Wednesdays in all three garages.

Art in Public Places Knoxville is a monumental installation of large-scale outdoor sculptures by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists. The sculptures enliven downtown Knoxville as well as McGhee Tyson Airport. Awards for the Art in Public Places exhibition will be presented by world-acclaimed sculptor, Allen Peterson. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Nouveau Classics on 128 South Gay Street on April 6.
