Cinema HoLa presents: El Hombre de al Lado/The Man Next Door

Two neighbors find they have different ideas about what's considered intrusive in
this comedy from Argentina. Leonardo is an industrial designer with a passion
for architecture, and the pride and joy of his life is his home, a villa designed by
Le Corbusier, the only example of his architecture in Latin America and a
masterpiece of 20th Century style. Tightly-wound Leonardo is happy in his home
until his next door neighbor Victor decides to make some changes to his place,
exposing a rift that goes beyond building alterations to touch on class and social
status.

The movie starts at 6:30 and the (bilingual) discussion follows the movie.

High school students who play drums and other percussion instruments will have a special opportunity to develop their skills this summer. The 1st Annual UT Summer Percussion Institute (UTSPI), a week-long workshop for high school students, will take place at the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus. Students will participate in daily hands-on clinics, master classes, ensemble rehearsals, and performances alongside percussion professionals. Instruction will be given in concert-orchestral percussion, mallet instruments, drum set, jazz & improvisation, steel band, ethnic instruments, percussion ensemble, and more.

The seminar will be taught by an esteemed faculty of professional percussionists including its founder and director, Dr. Andrew M. Bliss, Director of Percussion Studies at the UT School of Music in Knoxville. The other distinguished percussionist faculty are Keith Brown, UT Jazz faculty; Erin Walker, University of Kentucky World Music faculty; Casey Cangelosi, Percussion Solo Artist; Josh Jennings, Afro-Cuban/Brazilian Percussion Specialist; and Matt Weyer, Directors’ Workshop Coordinator for Contemporary Percussion Concepts.

According to Bliss, “One caveat for high school teachers is the two-day concurrent Director’s Workshop, which counts toward professional development credits, and includes an option to attend the students’ master classes, rehearsals and performances too.”

The UTSPI will be held at the Alumni Memorial Building located at 1408 Middle Drive, Knoxville, TN 37996 and is open to high school students of all backgrounds and skill sets. On First Friday July 5th., “2 Many Pixels” photo gallery is proud to present a collection of photographs by artist and 6 times Ilford Prize winner JACQUES GAUTREAU.

This exhibit explores the full extent of the photographic language, composition, colors, textures, shadows and offers a voyage through the most subtle and genuine emotions.
The photographs are all for sale, gallery archival prints, signed and numbered by the artists.

The photos will remain on the walls through the months of July and August.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Knoxville artist Bill Cook as the featured artist for July and August. His work is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall through Aug. 30.

As a young child growing up in the foothills of East Tennessee, Cook took up wood carving with a pocket knife, creating small carvings from the plentiful cedar wood on the family farm. As a University of Tennessee student, he discovered sculpting in clay, and, in the late 1990s, he began using marble as a sculptural medium. Cook enjoys the physical, mental and spiritual effort required to use marble to create sculpture. He currently resides in Knoxville with his wife and three children.

The gallery at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC) will feature art in the theme of Celebrating Freedom. The public is invited to the PCAC gallery to view original artwork in the form of oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, colored pencil, photography, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, and jewelry, created by Art Guild members.

In addition to viewing this fine art work, visitors also learn about the many art classes available during the month, and depending on the day and time, may view a class in session, or watch the open painting, beading, or figure drawing sessions that take place in the studio. The gallery is also the perfect place to shop for a reasonably priced gift of art.

Bliss Home is pleased to present Knoxville artist, Beth Meadows, for July's First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary Steamboat Sandwiches will be provided and Beth's art will be featured the whole month of July. Beth Meadows graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BFA in Studio Art in 2007. She has lived and worked in Knoxville since then and currently manages The Salvage Room for the non-profit Knox Heritage, receiving and selling historic building materials. She is also the Director, as well as an artist, at 17th Street Studios, a work space for thirteen artists near downtown Knoxville. Beth's July exhibit will feature work inspired by a subscription to Vogue her sister gave her a few summers ago. Most pieces began by tearing out pages from these magazines- photographs of scenes, models, and clothing.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition entitled “East Meets West” featuring ceramics, Chinese watercolor paintings and woodblock prints by Oak Ridge artist Eun-Sook Kim. “Although my primary medium is ceramics, I consider myself a painter first,” says Eun-Sook Kim. “Through brushwork, I feel in harmony with nature. Like a speck in the landscape of a classical Chinese painting, I am infinitely small, yet essential in nature. Interweaving different strands from different cultures and countries, my art reflects the multicolored pattern of my life.”

Eun-Sook Kim received her B.A. in English literature from Ewha Woman's University in Seoul, Korea in the early 1960s. She was accepted into a graduate program at the University of Tennessee, and upon moving to Knoxville, she married and then stayed home with her children until they finished college. At that point, she resumed her graduate studies and received an M.F.A. in ceramics from UT in the 1990s. Her work has been featured in various juried shows throughout the U.S. and in Japan and Korea, and she has held solo exhibitions locally in Ewing Gallery, The Art Market Gallery, Oak Ridge Art Center, and the American Museum of Science and Energy. She founded and directed both the Corner Gallery and the Upstairs Gallery in Oak Ridge for many years. Currently, Kim is a member of the National Council for Educators of Ceramic Art, the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA), Foothills Craft Guild and the Art Market Gallery. She has extensive experience leading workshops, lectures, and teaching. Her work has appeared in various Ceramics magazines published globally. “If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.” Alphonse de Larmartine, Nineteenth century French poet turned politician

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of recent photographs of Istanbul, Turkey by Dean Rice opening Friday, July 5, at 5:00 PM in the display case of the Emporium Center. In this exhibition, Rice attempts to underscore Larmartine’s quote by offering viewers a glimpse of the vibrancy, diversity and beauty of this city and its people. While political protests have brought Turkey and Istanbul, in particular, to the forefront of recent world news, Dean Rice’s photographs reflect a city that bridges rather than divides cultures and reveals the people who bring these cultures to life. Rice has traveled to Turkey twice in the past two years in conjunction with the Knoxville Turkish Alliance and the Turkish American Chamber of Commerce. “I have had the opportunity to travel to quite a few countries, and I can say without equivocation that the Turkish people are the most hospitable and gracious I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I am proud to call many my friends,” Rice said. Istanbul is a city of 14 million people that connects Europe and Asia both culturally and geographically. It has served as the seat of power of empires from 700 B.C. until the end of the Ottoman Empire following World War II. Each successive culture has left is historic mark on the city weaving an amazing tapestry of religious beliefs, architectural styles, cuisines, music and literature. Today, Istanbul remains the cultural capitol of Turkey and one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world.

Knoxville native Dean Rice has enjoyed photography for the past 25 years. Although he enjoys photographing the scenic beauty of East Tennessee, his primary photography interest lies in capturing images that portray the uniqueness of the daily life, customs and people from cultures unfamiliar to most East Tennesseans. In 2011, the Emporium displayed an exhibit of his photographs of the Miao and Dong minority people groups of rural southern China. Rice serves as the chief of staff to Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett and is an adjunct member of the faculty in the University of Tennessee’s College of Communication and Information. He is a member of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), Blount Mansion Board of Directors and the past chairman of the Board of Visitors for the College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee. He is father to twin 10 year old girls who share his love of photography.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present the first annual Knoxville Photo 2013, a new exhibition featuring selected works from 36 artists throughout the Southeast region. Knoxville Photo was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses photographs depicting all subjects and genres, including streetscapes, cityscapes, landscapes, environmental portraiture, abstracts, and more, and will be displayed in the Emporium Center from July 5-26, 2013. A public reception will take place on Friday, July 5, from 5:00-9:00 PM with an awards ceremony at 6:00 PM in which $750 in cash awards will be announced.

“Fine Arts Blount” Member Art Exhibit, coordinated by Cindy McDannel on the Art Wall at the Bookmark Café, Art Panels at the Reading Rotunda, two square pedestal cases and two vertical display cases in the Entry Rotunda, through July.

Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

A native of Blount county, Charles E. Kirkland's Music & Dance series includes paintings, wall sculptures and standing sculpture. Kirkland feels that his art reveals his inner being and uses bold and subtle strokes and colors to get the feel he strives for in his work. This abstract series is unique due to the combination of underpinnings being used, as well as the color and patterns. There is a boldness and energy to the work.

West Virginia native, Karen Shaw, is Artist of the Month during July at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine). Karen is proficient in colored pencil along with other mediums such as watercolor, printmaking, graphite pencil and jewelry. Shaw has won several art awards over the last few years including one Best of Show, and her work hangs in family and friends’ homes from California to Italy.
