East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists: 35th Annual Front Page Follies
Category: Fundraisers
This year’s Front Page Follies, an annual fundraiser hosted by the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists to raise money for student journalism scholarships at UT, Knoxville and Pellissippi State, will take place on Saturday, July 13.
This year's Front Page Follies show should be especially well-rounded. Not only is there plenty of news to spoof, but for a little change of venue, the show itself will be in the University of Tennessee's Carousel Theatre. It's an appropriate location, since Follies' 2013 honoree is longtime University of Tennessee journalism professor Bonnie “Blue Pen†Hufford.
Cast members will be poking fun at the usual assortment of politicians and newsmakers, as well as events like UT's Sex Week and the trials of a certain well-known local company.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception featuring cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres. The cast takes the stage at 7:30.
Tickets are $75 each, with a college student rate of $35. (The show is not appropriate for children.) A limited amount of “premium†theater-front seating is available in blocks for $100 per ticket. A portion of the ticket price is tax-deductible. The event funds journalism scholarships at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College.
For tickets, contact Megan Venable Smith, 865-974-6903 or msmith93@utk.edu, or order online via credit card at www.etspj.org.
The Creative Arts Co-op: "Experiment in Murder"
The Creative Arts Co-op is hosting a comedy night - or are we?!? Our troupe of comedic actors is set to perform skits and interactive improv. But the actors aren't acting, people aren't showing, and nobody is being funny - in the right way. Then, the body shows up...
Join us for another original comedy - and interactive murder mystery. An evening out, our shows are a social event. Not only do guests enjoy a live theatre show, but they enjoy a delicious dessert buffet and socialize while working on the murder. Our shows emphasize the funny, not the graphic. We encourage audience participation but never drag anyone on stage. Feel free to speak with the characters, interrogate the suspects, study the clues, and solve a murder!

Knoxville Museum of Art: Thornton Dial: Thoughts on Paper
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
This pioneering exhibition will present an underappreciated side to the work of Thornton Dial, Sr. (b. 1928), an artist best known and celebrated for his large scale, multi-media assemblages dealing with a wide range of charged social and political themes. Since the early 1990s, Dial has also produced a rich body of lyrical works on paper, often engaged with themes of gender and human relationships. This exhibition focuses on the very earliest of those drawings, a group of 50 sheets with Dial’s characteristic and broadly coherent iconography of women, fish, birds,
roosters, and tigers, rendered in a variety of media. Organized by the Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina.
