The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame will host an Art Show/Book Signing featuring award-winning photojournalist Robin Layton. The show will be held at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on November 13th and 14th from 11:00 to 5:00 PM. In addition, on November 13th following the show, Robin will lead a photography class from 5:00-6:00 PM followed by a reception until 8:00 PM. The show is free of charge and is open to the public.

Robin Layton is an artist, filmmaker and has been an award-winning photojournalist for the past 25 years. At age 24, she was named one of the eight most talented photographers in America by LIFE magazine. Her documentary images have been featured by the Smithsonian and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Her newest book, "hoop, the american dream™" includes approximately 100 stunning photographs of a wide variety of American hoops including childhood hoops of Tamika Catchings, LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, and Robin Roberts.

A portion of the proceeds from the art show and book sales at the Hall of Fame will benefit the Pat Summitt Foundation and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition, special event posters will be on sale during the show with a portion of those proceeds also benefiting the Foundation and the Hall of Fame. All other sales of her book will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Brown Bag Lecture with Ron Jones
Beginning with the early history of Scotland through their emigration to America, Ron Jones will discuss the history of the Scots-Irish. He will cover the various peoples to settle in and inhabit Scotland over the centuries, their origins, traditions, and religions that differentiated them from their neighbors in Ireland, England, and Wales. Special emphasis will be on their political and religious differences with the English crown, beginning with the rise of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, the dramatic impact of John Knox and his teachings, and the plantation of Ulster by James I, plus their migration to America beginning in the early 1700s and their impact on the Revolutionary War and government. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to host a monthly series featuring artists demonstrating their work and discussing their inspirations and processes. The series, entitled “Time Well Spent: Inspiration at Lunch”, is free and open to the public, and guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch. The next presentation in the series takes place on Wednesday, November 13, from 12:00-1:00 PM with photographer Jeffrey Stoner, who will give a presentation entitled “The Fine Art of Photography” in which he discusses the history of photography as a fine art. Jeffrey Stoner is known for making photographs that capture the essence of place. His passion is to capture images of the beauty and wonder that surround us.`

The presentation will take place at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, 700 Hall of Fame Drive, in downtown Knoxville in conjunction with an Art Show/Book Signing by artist, filmmaker and award-winning photojournalist Robin Layton. Layton’s photographs will be on display November 13-14, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the Hall. She is promoting her newest book, “Hoop, the American Dream™”, which includes approximately 100 stunning photographs of a wide variety of American hoops including childhood hoops of Tamika Catchings, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal and Pat Summitt. Proceeds from the art show and book sales at the Hall of Fame will benefit the Pat Summitt Foundation and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. “Elevated Perspectives,” the works of artist Mike C. Berry, of Knoxville, are on display in the Edith Davis Gallery at Rose Center in Morristown. Mike C. Berry is a versatile painter who works in pastels, oils and acrylics. His colorful and vibrant compositions, often bending and twisting the cityscape, have become his easily identifiable style. Originally from the Midwest, Mike studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art & Design, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Art. He has exhibited regionally over the past decade and is currently securing gallery representation and exhibiting nationally. Working part-time as a Gallery Manager for the UT Downtown Gallery has led him to explore the restlessness of city life, which has developed his signature artistic theme: movement of the cityscape. Mike’s work has also been used in Pilot Food Mart Billboards across the Knoxville and surrounding areas. In 2010, The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra commissioned Mike to create a painting to celebrate the Symphony’s 75th anniversary and prints are now available through the KSO. Mike’s painting “Gay Street Bridge” is the cover art for Jack Neely’s new book; Knoxville, This Obscure and Prismatic City. His small works can be viewed on a blog called “Postcards from Knoxville” (http://mikecberry.blogspot.com). Recently, The Knoxville News Sentinel Readers Poll voted Mike Berry the Best Visual Artist of East Tennessee. In describing his work, Mike is quoted as saying, “My entire artistic style is reminiscent of the chaotic pace of modern day life and that, combined with my fascination of twisted perspectives and dramatic lighting, and sometimes with a sprinkling of nostalgia, lends itself to the use of vivid color and bold bravado brushwork.” Mike supports many local charities with his work along with exhibiting and representation with the Plum Gallery in Knoxville and the River Gallery in Chattanooga, TN. His work can also be seen on display at his studio located in the Emporium Center at 100 South Gay Street, Suite 111, Knoxville, Tennessee open to the public every First Friday from 5-9pm.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is proud to present “Art Appetizers,” a new exhibition of painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, ceramic, and more from local artists who are members of the Arts & Culture Alliance. The East Tennessee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, present their annual lecture series, which invites scholars from around the world to present the latest archaeological discoveries. It is free and open to the public.

The Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture is pleased to present two collage exhibitions in November. Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center and Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works will open Monday, November 4 with a reception in the Ewing Gallery at 6:30.

Prior to the lecture, ICC founder and New York gallerist, Pavel Zoubok will deliver a lecture on the history of collage -- "Collage Culture: From Picasso to Facebook." The lecture will begin at 5:30Pm in room 109 of the Art and Architecture building on the UT campus.

Remix presents the work of over 100 artists drawn from the ICC's permanent lending and research collection alongside further loans from prominent artists. Remix weaves the narrative of collage through the history of modern and contemporary art. Coined in the early 20th century from the French word coller, meaning to glue or stick, the term collage originally described a revolutionary method of art-making. Over time its definition has expanded to represent an approach to and perception of the modern world. The 100 artists featured in the exhibition utilize collage's core conceptual traits—heterogeneity, fragmentation and appropriation—to address with clarity and immediacy the circumstances of their times. Remix explores the impact of collage on artistic and cultural expression and gathers together the diverse fragments of a rich artistic tradition.

Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works is a presentation of 20 recent works. They are a collaboration between Meier and Master Printer, Gary Lichtenstein. The images are 11 color silkscreens of original Meier collages with one-of-a-kind collage and drawing on top of the prints.

In the Blackberry Farm Gallery
Knoxville Artist Jered Sprecher’s paintings, drawings and installations focus on the “fleeting images and objects that surround us,” according to the artist. An associate professor in the University of Tennessee’s School of Art, Sprecher received his bachelor of arts degree from Concordia University in Nebraska and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. His work has been exhibited at The Drawing Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Chinati Foundation, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Des Moines Art Center and Espai d'art Contemporani de Castelló. In 2009, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Most recently, he was the artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

Sally Ham Govan draws figures and dogs and creates digital illustrations of city scenes. She has a BFA in studio art (drawing and graphic design) from the University of Tennessee and an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford. She designs and edits publications and websites for Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University.
