Sally Ham Govan draws figures and dogs and creates digital illustrations of city scenes. She has a BFA in studio art (drawing and graphic design) from the University of Tennessee and an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford. She designs and edits publications and websites for Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University. Previously she worked as an art director at Whittle Communications and a graphic designer at the Knoxville News Sentinel. Her website is sallygovan.com.

A special art exhibit during the month of November will be displayed at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine) , Fairfield Glade. The Art Guild will pay a Memorial Tribute to artist, Larry Harrington, who passed away in August.

Larry was an excellent artist and his graphite and charcoal drawings were exquisite - elegant and beautiful in their simplicity and execution. He was always ready to help anyone with any problem. Everything he did was with a big smile. Larry was, also, an Episcopalian Monk. What an interesting person he was.

In conjunction with this exhibit, a reception for the public will be at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, home of the Art Guild, beginning November 3 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm . Larry’s art work will be on display and for sale along with many other items through the month of November.

Bliss Home is pleased to present Bottle Cap Art by Knoxville artist, Ryan Blair, for November's First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, November 1st, from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary Steamboat Sandwiches will be provided and Ryan's art will be featured for the month of November. Ryan's exhibit Bottle Cap Art is funky and fried southern folk art acrylic paintings on wood depicting vintage neon signage, distressed, and then covered in painted bottle caps. Bottle Cap Art consists of mixed media, like wood, bottle caps and acrylic paints. Ryan's inspiration for Bottle Cap Art comes from vintage neon signs across the United States. Ryan was born and raised in Central Indiana but has spent the last 17 years in the foothills of East Tennessee. Ryan holds a degree in Art Education, with an emphasis in painting, which he uses to teach art in Knoxville's public school system. Website: ryanblairart.com

A1LabArts and the Center for the Creative Mind is happy to announce a group exhibition "Layered and Built," which showcases recent work by 3 MFA painting graduates from the University of Tennessee. Their work explores various forms of abstraction informed by sources such as architecture, pattern, geometry, debris, and pop culture. The exhibition and opening reception is November 1st from 6-10 p.m. at the Center for the Creative Mind, 23 Emory Place.
Kate Faulkner and Briena Harmening reside and work in Knoxville. Briena is a member of the Vacuum Shop Studios, and teaches the International Baccalaureate Art program at West High School. Kate Faulkner currently coordinates the Summer Art Academy at the Knoxville Museum of Art and teaches at both Walter State Community College in Morristown, and at Tusculum College, in Greenville, Tennessee. Rachel Clark has taught at Ohio University and co-directed a study abroad program in Hungary. She currently teaches at Ohio University Lancaster and in the Ohio University’s Upward Bound program.

Every Spiritile is handcrafted in Atlanta, Georgia from American made copper,
glass and wood. Finely ground colored glass is handpainted on copper and then
fired by kiln at 1500 degrees.

Lisa throws and hand builds functional pottery. Most of her textural pieces are altered while still wet to highlight the intrinsic beauty of the clay itself. Lisa mixes her own glazes, which adds a unique depth and quality to the work.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by clients of Open Arms Care’s Flying Brushes program entitled “Obstacle Luminance”. The exhibition includes paintings and will be displayed in the Balcony of the Emporium Center. A public reception will take place on Friday, November 15, from 5:00-7:00 PM.

Art therapy is often the only way out of a marginalized life in which barriers of intellectual and physical disabilities are compounded by institutional and social stigma; a stigma that further confines already hampered personalities, making them seem beyond connection, almost infantile, vegetative, lost. Inside a limited set of mind/body connections are unlimited possibilities.

One painting will take anywhere from two to eight hours to complete, sometimes spanning numerous days. The result is absolutely breathtaking. This artwork proves that men, women and children whose physical or intellectual spectrum is narrower than most exude their own luminance just the same. Or better.

“Obstacle Luminance”. is on display November 8-26, 2013 at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, downtown Knoxville. Beginning on November 1st, the gallery at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC) will feature art in the theme of City Scapes. The public is invited to the PCAC gallery to view original artwork in the form of oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, colored pencil, photography, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, and jewelry, created by Art Guild members.
In addition to viewing this fine art work, visitors also learn about the many art classes available during the month, and depending on the day and time, may view a class in session, or watch the open painting, beading, or figure drawing sessions that take place in the studio. The gallery is also the perfect place to shop for a reasonably priced gift of art.

AAA 75TH ANNIVERSARY PRINT PORTFOLIO
Daniel G. Hill, Assistant Professor of Studio Methods, School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons in New York, will be giving a lecture on digital printmaking in conjunction with the American Abstract Artists 75th Anniversary Print Portfolio on display at the UT Downtown Gallery. Mr. Hill is was also the project director for this portfolio. The 75th anniversary portfolio is the first digitally printed portfolio released by the AAA.

The UT Downtown Gallery is please to present the 75th Anniversary American Abstract Artists Print Portfolio, a exhibition consisting of 48 archival digital prints. AAA published its first portfolio in 1937. It consisted of 30 lithographs and, in lieu of a catalog, accompanied the group's first exhibition, which was held at the Squibb Gallery in New York City. In addition to that first portfolio and this 75th Anniversary portfolio, only two others have been published—one commemorating the organization's 50th anniversary, and one for the 60th. All prints are 9.75" x 12.75"

The School of Art at the University of Tennessee takes great pride in the excellence of its printmaking program, so we are excited to host this portfolio, which breaks new ground with its technical production. Printed digitally instead of using a more time-honored method of printmaking, the 75th Anniversary Portfolio seeks to move not only its members, but also printmaking and contemporary art forward into this era of rapid technological change.

This is the first digitally produced portfolio published by American Abstract Artists. All past portfolios–1937, 1987, 1997–were produced using various forms of lithography and means of transferring image to plate. Unlike traditional printmaking, the digital inkjet process does not involve a physical matrix from which ink is transferred to paper. This marks both a technical and a conceptual shift in printmaking. Our choice of the medium situates this portfolio squarely in the current century and is an indication of the group's forward momentum.

The artists were asked to provide a digital file meeting predetermined specifications, yet no restrictions were placed on how the file could be created. The digital process enabled a wide variety of approaches that include abstract and documentary photography, scanning of flat-work made expressly for the project, digital compositing and image manipulation, as well as the use of vector-based software and hand-coded algorithms. The results are as varied as the artists' individual sensibilities.
