Museum of Appalachia Christmas Gathering
Category: Festivals, special events, History, heritage and Kids, family
The Museum of Appalachia continues the tradition of families and friends gathering around the table to celebrate the simple joys of the season with the 2nd Annual Christmas Gathering: A Bountiful Southern Feast.
On Sunday, December 15, 2013 a large buffet of authentic Southern Christmas fare will be served from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm. Included in the buffet will be some of the dishes the Museum does best, chicken and dumplings, sweet potato casserole, deviled eggs, iron skillet cornbread, and savory desserts. While dining in the Museum’s Heritage Hall, guests can warm by the fire while enjoying local, talented musicians playing songs of the Christmas season.
Visitors are welcomed to tour Christmas in Old Appalachia before or after the Bountiful Southern Feast. During the day, special historical demonstrations will be taking place throughout the Village, including blacksmithing, sawmilling, weaving and sassafras tea brewing. The Anderson County chapter of the Sons of the Revolution will tell wintertime war stories around the encampment near the McClung Cabin.
Seating for this family friendly event is limited; purchase tickets by December 9 to secure reservations. A self-guided tour of Christmas in Old Appalachia is included with each ticket. There are special offerings for this event for Museum Members.
December hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed Christmas Day). The Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate and a not-for-profit organization, is located 16 miles north of Knoxville, one mile east of I-75, exit 122. 2nd Annual Roane Open Art Show
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Just in time for Christmas, the 2013 Roane Open Art Show will take place next weekend, December 14-15, in the downtown Harriman building known as The Annex, at 431 N. Roane St. Free to the public, the show will feature dozens of local professional, accomplished amateur, and student artists displaying paintings, pottery, photography, textiles and various mixed-media works. Virtually all of the pieces on exhibit will be available for sale from the artists. The show runs from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Judging the show will be Jan Hill, who has been prominent within the East Tennessee art scene for 35 years. A graduate in Art from Carson-Newman University, Hill has taught art in both the public school and private sectors. Cash and an array of prizes will be awarded to artists in several categories thanks to private sponsors and local businesses. Produced in cooperation with the perennially popular Historic Harriman Tour of Homes, the Art Show is a designated stop on the tour, and each home on the tour will display a piece by one of the show's participating artists. These featured artists include Chuck Schwaner, Wayne Setser, Pam Fowler, Gloria Marine, Martha Raisanen, Katherine Moore, and Sherry Smith.
This is the second of what is planned to be an annual exhibition of work produced by the artists of East Tennessee. Although still a young group, the ACRC is generating much enthusiasm, not only in its dedicated volunteers, but also in local officials and organizations such as the Cornstalk Height Homeowners Community Organization, who recognize that active support of the arts is an investment in the future of Roane County. The use of this year's venue, formerly occupied by the Roane Medical Center, was graciously loaned by the City of Harriman.

Rose Center: Fresh Impressions: Tour de France
Category: Exhibitions, visual art
In July of 2013, eight artists traveled to France to paint en plein air as part of a workshop held at La Bonne Etoile, about an hour outside of Paris. Six of these artists are represented in the exhibit “Fresh Impressions: Tour de France”at Rose Center through December 19.
La Bonne Etoile was developed to assist artists who would benefit from an experience in another culture as well as offer them a time of seclusion and solitude for creating and recreating. Though some subject matter and scenery are the similar, each artist shares her own impressions and discoveries of this experience. The unique styles and colors of the artists complement each other. They were all inspired by the light, colors, flowers, scenery and culture of France.
Rose Center is located at 442 W. Second Street in Morristown, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Rose Center at 423-581-4330, visit www.rosecenter.org, or www.facebook.com/rosecenter
