The Farragut Arts Council will sponsor the 2014 Farragut High School Art Show this February at the Farragut Town Hall. Awards will be given for best in show and first, second and third places during a reception to honor the artists and their work on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

View during regular Town Hall hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Reception: Tuesday, Feb. 4 - 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Athens Area Council for the Arts 34th Big Time/Small Town Season of Performances features world famous performers and some from our own (regional) backyard. All shows will be held at Athens City Middle School, 200 Keith Lane, Athens, Tennessee at 7:30 PM.

In honor of Black History Month, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers bring the a cappella spiritual to Athens on Monday, February 3rd. The ensemble, which is comprised entirely of current students at Fisk University, broke racial barriers in the US and abroad when it introduced slave songs to the world in 1871. Nearly 150 years later, the singers are preserving the rich, distinctly American music known now as the Negro spiritual.

For the final offering in the season Dan Akroyd, Judy Belushi, and musical director Paul Shaffer present the one and only Official Blues Brothers Revue on Wednesday, March 12. It's the closest show to the real thing as possible. Wayne Catania and Keiron Lafferty as Jake and Elwood Blues lead the high-energy intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Revue Band in a performance that pays homage to Chicago's rich history of blues, soul music, and gospel in the true spirit of the original Blues Brothers.

A family season ticket package (immediate family only) is $150, a couple's ticket package is $100, and an individual ticket package is $60. Individual performance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Advance individual adult tickets may be purchased at a $2 discount.

Tennessee Shines is a weekly radio show performed live for an in-studio audience at the Knoxville Visitor Center Mondays at 7pm and broadcast live on WDVX FM and WDVX.com. Hosts are Bob Deck and Paige Travis. Tickets are $10, free for students with valid ID and children ages 14 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the WDVX Blue Plate Special, noon weekdays and Saturdays at the Knoxville Visitor Center, or at the door beginning at 6 p.m. on the night of the show. The guest performers for the February 3 James A. Dick Mighty Musical Monday Program will be KSO Woodwind Quintet. In addition to the performers, Bill Snyder and Freddie Brabson will play selections on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Guest MC for the program will be Hallerin Hill. A lunch consisting of a sandwich, chips, and a dessert may be purchased in the lobby for $5.00. In addition several snacks may be purchased at the concession stand such as soft drinks, bottled water, popcorn, candy. There is no charge for the program.

The WordPlayers, in collaboration with The Carpetbag Theatre, will tour: A Woman Called Truth by Sandra Fenichel Asher – A one-act play with music celebrating the life and achievements of Sojourner Truth. Directed by Linda Parris-Bailey with musical direction by Kelly Jolly. The play begins at the 1851 women’s rights convention in Akron, Ohio. We then go back in time to 1797 and travel with Sojourner as she remembers some of the extraordinary experiences that shaped her life. We get a glimpse of her highly cruel and unjust treatment as a slave. We experience how she bravely took her freedom and how she fought to free her son. At the end of the play, we learn how she became “Sojourner Truth” and get a taste of her dynamic spirit as an orator as she delivers her famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech.

A Woman Called Truth is an important story about a significant woman in our country’s history. You are invited to these free, public performances!

February 1, 12:00 PM - IJAMS BIRDING SERIES: Sandhill Cranes at Hiwassee
(Ages 12 and up) Weather permitting, join Ijams Senior Naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales for a road trip to Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge to see sandhill cranes wintering at the Meigs County location. Golden and bald eagles, winter ducks, and whooping cranes are also possible. Meet at the Ijams Visitor Center. The fee for this program is $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Everyone has scars in this stirring period drama. In April 1865, a wounded Jewish Confederate soldier returns to his home in Richmond only to find it ruined and abandoned--except for two former slaves also raised in the Jewish faith. As the three men celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets and grapple with an uncertain future brought on by the end of the Civil War.

This production contains strong language and content and is recommended for high school and up.
