Cresthill Cinema Club: The Saxon Charm
Category: Film
The next CCC screening will take place on Friday, May 2, at 8:00PM when we’ll be having a behind-the-scenes look at the world of show business.
Our feature will be the rarely-shown 1948 drama, The Saxon Charm. Adapted from Frederic Wakeman’s hard-hitting yet satirical 1947 novel, The Saxon Charm exposes the story of Matt Saxon, a bullying, manipulative and egomaniacal theater producer who has no qualms about destroying the lives of others, in his attempts to further himself. Robert Montgomery plays the nasty, self-serving Saxon. John Payne is playwright Eric Busch and Susan Hayward, his wife Janet. Both fall victim to Saxon’s ruthlessness, as does the late, great Audrey Totter, portraying his singer-actress girlfriend, Alma. Supporting this sterling Hollywood quartet are a bevy of film favorites. Among them: Harry Morgan, Cara Williams, Chill Wills, Heather Angel and the one-and-only Harry Von Zell.
The Saxon Charm will be preceded in May by “Taps for a Hoofer,” a 1954 episode of the memorable ABC-TV anthology, Pepsi-Cola Playhouse. “Taps for a Hoofer” is the tale of a has-been dance star who banks on his former popularity to attract women to his newfound dance school. Intrigue and danger ensue in this rather outlandish melodrama, which stars Roy Roberts, Peggy Knudsen and Andrea King. Rick Jason, Murvyn Vye and Tol Avery also lend their talents to this fascinating teleplay.
Our location: The spacious clubhouse of the Windover Apartments. The journey there will take you to Cheshire Drive (off Kingston Pike, near the Olive Garden); going down Cheshire, turn right at the Windover Apartments sign, then go to the third parking lot on your right, next to the pool. There, the building that houses the clubhouse and offices of the Windover will be just a few steps away!
So, there it is, friends: “Taps for a Hoofer” and The Saxon Charm – and an evening of showbiz sensations that are made to please. I do hope you'll be there to enjoy it all at the Cresthill Cinema Club on May 2!
